1841 Census - Boothroyd in Holmfirth
« on: Monday 05 November 07 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Just discovered my Joseph Boothroyd didn't die until 1846, aged 76 - in Holmfirth.

Could anyone please see if they can find him on the 1841 census for me?

Thanks

Jill

Hi Christine,

Not sure about this one. I had to look up Wooldale on the map - and I see it's only a couple of miles from Holmfirth.

It looks as if this Joseph Boothroyd is living with his wife, although I know the 1841 census doesn't specify relationships. The wife I know about was Mary (nee Mountain). I'm pretty sure that she was buried in Holmfirth way back in 1813 aged only 41, so it's possible that Joseph remarried to a Martha.

I'll see if I can find that marriage, but - yes please - if you could send me the image for that entry, I'd be really grateful.

Jill

I've found a marriage on the IGI -

26 Feb 1816 Kirkburton
Joseph Boothroyd & Martha Johnson

It's certainly the right time and place. Unfortunately, I only have a couple of booklets for Kirkburton - and they're baptisms, not marriages. Nothing on Family History Online either.  :(

I don't suppose you have 1816 Kirkburton marriages? It would be nice to see if the marriage entry indicates if Joseph was a widower. If it does, we've got him!!!

Hi Jill,

I forgot to tell you that Wooldale was close to Holmfirth, I was rushing to type it before I had to switch off.

Sorry I don't have Kirkburton marriages but I know a couple of people who post on here have so maybe if you post that as another lookup it will be seen or I could email one of them if you like.

If you pm your email address I'll send the image.

jillruss - not sure if you've since looked at the Joseph Boothroyd/Martha Johnson marriage in 1816, but there is no indication on the entry to say that Joseph is a widower.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks, both.

Yes, that is my Joseph and, despite the marriage entry not describing him as a widower when he married Martha, I've come to the conclusion that this was my Joseph remarrying.

I've also discovered he (reputedly!) fathered a child in 1794 by Barbary Bailey prior to his first marriage. Only just 'prior' though, as the child was baptised after his marrige to Mary Mountain. He obviously liked the ladies!

Thanks again.
