Rorke Family Tyrellstown House Mullahuddart
« on: Monday 05 November 07 20:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm a descendant of Andrew Rorke who was born here around 1779 and would be grateful for any suggestions of where I could look for some more detailed information about the family His wife was Ellen Sweetman and he had scads of children. Many thanks

Hi Franni,

Welcome to RootsChat.

The Rorkes listed below were Co. Dublin Subscribers of Samuel Lewis' 1837 "Topographical Dictionary
of Ireland."
Those marked with an Asterisk (*) are Subscribers for large paper Copies.

*Rorke, Andrew, Esq., Tyrrelstown, Mullahuddart,
*Rorke, Edmund, Esq., Clonsilla, near Castlenock.
*Rorke, John, Esq., Jamestown, near Kilternan.
*Rorke, John, Esq., Finstown-house, Lucan.
*Rorke, L., Esq., Neilstown-house, near Clondalkin.
*Rorke, P. C., Esq., Nanger near Clondalkin.

What denomination was Andrew Rorke?

Thank you - as far as I know, John and Edmond were Andrew Rorke's brothers. They were catholics and Andrew Rorke was a magistrate at some point

Hi Franni,

I'm googling for information about the Rorke family. The Connaught Journal, Galway, December 1st 1823 mentions Miss Margaret Rorke, daughter of Andrew Rorke, of Tyrrelstown, Co. Dublin.

Kilkenny Independent, Saturday, May 3rd, 1828 Edmond O'Rorke, Esq., Tyrrelstown House, Co. Dublin,
to Maria, eldest daughter of John Sweetman, Esq., Belvedere-place, Dublin.

Griffiths Valuations Dublin 1848-51
Edmund Rorke, Esq., Tyrrelstown, Mulhuddart.
John Rorke, Bay Mulhuddart.
Lawerence Rorke, Kilmartin, Mulhuddart.
Edmund Rorke, Esq., Macetown South, Mulhuddart.

If old records for Mulhuddart National School exist they might contain some information. The school was established by the Blanchardstown Patriotic Society in 1822.

Thank you - I had found that reference to a "miracle" and Margaret Rorke but couldn't find out what the miracle was! I have also found passing references to the family in various guidebooks of the time, including the fact that they had an enclosed cemetary bulit. I am visiting Dublin on business shortly - if I have time and energy, I could hire a car and drive out there and have a look round. I suspect that is the only way I will get any further information.

Edmond and Simon, 15 Beresford St (printers)
James, 3 Lower Pembroke St (carriage undertaker) - spelt Rourke in street listing

John, 20 Upper Temple St (solicitor)

Franni,
I don't know much about Tyrrelstown House which now seems to be the home of Blanchardstown Golf Centre, but Finnstown House is an hotel, so if you decide to spend an extra day doing some research you might like to spend the night there since it was once owned by your relatives.
Here's a link to their website:

Hi Franni,

I'm not certain what this is about ...

Queries:
Mulhuddart. Alexander L Rorke.....................................................................96

It's a "Dublin Historical Record" mentioned on a page of the 'From Ireland' © website of Dr. Jane Lyons
of Dublin. Click to have a look. It's under Contents ... September, 1938.

Franni & Christopher

I took a look at the Dublin Historical Record yesterday: the Query in Volume 1 was a multiple query from Alexander I Rorke of New York. The queries are answered by Rev Myles V Ronan in Volume 2 of the Record; but none of the answers seemed relevant to Rorke genealogy.

I have not copied or noted the queries and answers, so please don't ask for more details!
