Right then :D

Loads of good stuff - I consulted Burke's Landed Gentry 18th ed. (1965)

John Drake who married Frances Vanderstegen was baptised at Poughill, Devon on 17 Sep 1797

His father was John Drake "of Poughill" who was baptised at Cheriton Fitzpaine 23 Sep 1773 and was married at Poughill to Ann Heal on 9 Jun 1795.

The line then takes the Drakes of Cheriton Fitzpaine and previously of Cruwys Morchard back another 7 generations.

In fact somebody appears to have done, and posted on the internet, a lot of work on this family: http://cmdrake.tribalpages.com/.  The only material difference between what is on that website and Burke's is that John Drake b 1741 Cheriton Fitzpaine is shown in Burke's as a son of John Drake of Cheriton Fitzpaine bap 8 Mar 1713, who in turn is son of James Drake bap Cruwys Morchard 25 Mar 1682 son of George b 1641.

In the tribal pages site John b 1741 Cheriton Fitzpaine is shown as son of John Drake b 1709 Cruwys Morchard, who in turn is son of George Drake bap Cruwys Morchard 1675 son of George b 1641.

The trees then join up again.

You may be interested to know that Burke's takes the Vanderstegen line back to 14th century Flanders.

Hope that helps

Hi Anna

thats great, the tribal pages partly belongs to myself, and checking the Gentry is to confirm what we already have. and it looks like we have a few generations wrong.  so that is a great help to try and sort it out, does it stop at George Drake 1641?

I am very intrested about the Vanderstegen line,, not to sure what flanders means?

Kind Regards

Russell

Hi Russell,

No, it doesn't stop at George b 1641/bap Cruwys Morchard 7 Mar 1641

His father was Humphrey Drake of Cruwys Morchard who married a Susan ______

His father was Humphrey Drake of C.M. who married Ellen Morice on 24 Sep 1598

His father was John Drake of C. M. whose will was proved at Exeter 23 March 1552

That's as far as it goes.

Re the Vanderstegen line - Flanders is their place of origin (modern Belgium).  The earliest place name mentioned, if I recall correctly, was Bruges.
