lokking for Cowie's
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 01:31 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to get some information on George Muir Cowie. He was married to Helen Frame who i think was born on 31st dec 1879 and had a son called Archibald Fleming Cowie who was born on 21st aug 1898. Archibald was my grandfather. This is a starting point to doing the whole family tree, the people who can help me in the family have all passed away and i live way out in Australia, so it is proving difficult. If anyone has any of the information hanging around that may be helpful it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Sandy.

hi pal,

will start from the begining with richard cowie and mary ann hay who were the parents of your george.

seems that from the census details the cowie's where born in airdrie and died in airdrie.

richard and mary ann were married in airdrie in october 1841 and i will follow shortly with all the census details as i have most already just to sort out george's brothers.

I think the date you have for Helen Frames birth is more likely to be her marriage date.   Helen Frame was b.10/4/1857 New Monkland, d. John Frame and Rachel Somers.

1871 Census - New Monkland, Lanarkshire at 5 Blacksquare

John Frame      53        Fireman at Tubework     b. Dalserf, Lanarkshire
Rachael Frame  51                                             b.      ditto
Jane Frame       20                                             b. Airdrie, Lanarkshire
Janet Frame      17                                                     ditto
Marion Frame     15                                                    ditto
Helen Frame       12                                                    ditto
Thomas Frame    9                                                      ditto
Margaret Frame (or France)   7   g/dau.                      ditto

Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone

Just logged on for the first time today and am amazed at the information you have found.  Joe, my great grandfather was David Cowies nephew and trained as a hairdresser and went on to open a barber shop in Airdrie where my Dad used to get his hair cut.  His father was called James Cromerty Smith Cowie and was married to Rebecca Ralston.  They moved to the USA where my grandfather died and my grandmother eventually moved back to Shettlestone.  She ended up with Alzeimers and her daughter brought her back to the USA where she past away aged 98 in 2001.  I have been researching the tree for a while and have been following the Cowie line although the Ralston line I have traced back to Ireland.

I will work on all the information you have given me the post anything that might be of interest to anyone else.

Hi Jaykim
Thanks for IM.
Re my Ralstons (and Wilsons)
This is what we have re my grandmother Rebecca Wilson's birth 1873 in Philadelphia (from a cousin's gedcom) -
"her parents went to US
she was born in US
family came back to Belfast
came to Glasgow
lived in Shankhill road".
Rebecca's parents were Robert Wilson (a farmer) and Elizabeth Ralston.
That's it!  The sum total of what I know about my grandmother's parent's after years of searching,  with and without expert help.
From family hearsay we know my grandmother was born in Philadelphia, but there is a total blank until her marriage in Glasgow in 1894.   I trawl the message boards continually, I can't believe my grandmother was an only child, and I hope some day a connection will "pop up".
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Peter
