I would think it unlikely he'd be registered as Dai. There are a few registrations in Cardiff district for David Fish, though - a marriage in 1905, a birth in 1915 and another in 1920. Any of those any good?

From Freebmd
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
David Fish june qtr 1915 Cardiff vol 11a pg 894 mother's maiden name Collin

David Fish march qtr 1920 Cardiff vol 11a pg 903 mother's maiden name Anderson

I also looked at the full GRO death index for 1984 - 2005 on Ancestry which is the only part that is fully indexed and found
David Fish b. 13/3/1920 death registered march 1997 Cardiff C6B 29
David Fish b. 5/7/1929 death reg May 2000 Cardiff A24B 10
David Fish b. 10/4/1915 death reg Nov 2005 Cardiff B55B 8

From the full GRO birth index, also on Ancestry
David Fish sept qtr 1929 Cardiff vol 11a pg 669 mother's maiden name Johnston

There could be others as well.

Well, I've looked through the full index from 1936 - 1950 and can't spot the marriage.
I did find
George D Fish m Edna Anderson dec qtr 1946 Cardiff vol 8b pg 458
David Fish m Ethel M Glavin june qtr 1937 Cardiff vol 11a pg 569
David Fish m Patricia Greenslade dec qtr 1850 vol 8b pg 330

Also searched Freebmd for Demspeys born Cardiff and found
Eileen N Dempsey dec qtr 1919 Cardiff vol 11a pg 806
Mary Dempsey june qtr 1921 Cardiff vol 11a pg 923
both with mother's maiden name O'Brien
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins

How sure are you about the Dempsey - Fish marriage? Could the relationship have been more 'informal'?
There is this marriage for a Mary
Mary Dempsey june qtr 1938 Cardiff vol 11a pg 928 to Leslie A McCue
birth reg
Leslie A McCue march qtr 1912 Cardiff vol 11a pg 741 mother's maiden name Blackmore
brother Patrick reg june qtr 1914 Cardiff vol 11a pg 811

possible reason for Dempsey - McCue marriage
birth reg
Patrick J McCue dec qtr 1938 Cardiff vol 11a pg 398 mother's maiden name Dempsey

There's also a marriage for
Margaret M Dempsey to Lee McCarthy dec qtr 1936 Cardiff Vol 11a pg 779
