Parents of Robert CLAYTON b1848
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 23:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi all.
Robert Clayton b.1848 in Hurst green, burnley area.
He married Jane Houghton in 1875 in burnley.
They had 8 children. Amelia, Ellen, Joseph(my husbands grandfather), Margaret, John, Jane, George and Lily.
I have traced the family back to 1881.
I am trying to find out who Roberts parents are.
I might have to get their marriage cert or his birth rego.

Any help someone could give would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kim :)

You could look at the 1851 and 1861 censuses to see if he is still living with them. That would give you their first names, any possible siblings too.

Hi Elaine.
I have had a look at the 51 and 61 census and I have narrowed it down to 4 families......... lots of robert claytons. >:(

The more I think about it, the more i think i will have to get a cert.
Just thought someone might be out there knowing the same family.

Thanks for your help.
Kim  :)

In the end you will need the crtificate to be sure you have the correct family.  The more you can ceck first before sending, the more likely you are to send for the right certificate.  Otherwise you could be sending for 4.
Have you tried the IGI for his baptism?

Are there any street indexes for the area?

Also... good chance one of his sons might be called after his father, and one of the daughters after his mother.

Have you checked the IGI or Free BMD for their marriage?

on the 1891 census his bith place is Dutton.

On 1851 census there is a Robert Clayton living with his mother and Grandmother and possibly aunt?  in Dutton

Hi Elaine.

Thank You for all your work. I have not checked the IGI yet. But I did just find that census entry yesterday at our library.(Porirua, New Zealand). Just before I was ready to leave. Didn't even have time to print it out........ :-\
Yes I do think it might be him.
In the 1891 census I think his birth place looks like Dutton.
When I do get around to ordering a cert which one am I more likely to get his parents information?
Is all the IGI microfiche on familysearch.org. or should I stick to the microfiche.

Sorry for all the questions but if I don't ask I won't find out.
Kim. :)

Hello Kim

I think all of the micro fiches are on FamilySearch, but not all church registers have been filmed. My catholic relatives fro example are not on. Not all churches agreed to the filming.

Robert's birth certificate will give his parent's names.  This census return is strange as Mary his mother seems to be classed as unmarried.  Clearly the children's father is not listed.

Hi,

From the BRVI  - marriage of Robert Clayton to Jane Houghton at Holy Trinity, Habergham Eaves, Burnley on 17th March, 1875.  Her father was Thomas Houghton.  No fathers name for Robert :'(

Looks like the one in Dutton is the right one.

Regards,
Mo
