Unreadable Surnames on 1841 census help please
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 21:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I've been struggling to find my GGG Grandmother "Susan" on the 1841 census.

On one of her son's birth certificates it states her maiden name was Boswall and on another son's birth certificate it states it was Leech/Leach.  I have found her on the 1871 to the 1901 as Susan Sanders b. 1833 Bethnal Green.

I have located an entry for just "Susan" on an online 1841 census:- HO107 piece 694, book 1, Enumeration District 2, Folio 37, Page 26, Line 9.

If someone has a hard copy of the census for Bethnal Green, I would be grateful if they could have a look to see if her surname matches one of the above surnames.

Many thanks in advance.

P.S. I am not convinced of the Boswall Surname at all as there seems to be so few around and I haven't been able to find the marriage of Susan (either Boswall or Leech/Leach to my GGG Grandfather John Sanders b. 1820 Spitalfields.  Their first son William Alfred Sanders was born 1863 (maiden name shown as Boswall).

Karen :)

It really is a very poor image.

Perhaps other Rootschatters could give their views.

Did they have any connection with York?

According to FREEBMD, a Susan Lacey is one of the 2 possible matches for John Henry Saunders in 1862-q4 (Ref 9d 107).
McDonough, Oliver, McLoughlin, O'Brien, Cuthbert, Keegan, Quirk(e), O'Malley, McGuirk (Ireland)
Dudley, Winchurch, Wolverson, Brookes (Black Country)
Concannon, Moore, Markowski (Markesky), Mottram, Lawton (Black Country)

This is a long shot but found the following in 1841

Folio 29, Page 5
King Street

Sarah BONNER - 39 - grocer
Francis BONNER - 20 - coach painter j.
Susan BOSWELL - 6 - not born in county

On Pallots marriage index is the following

Thos. BOSWALL
Ann BONNER

It is a poor image, but it looks like Lacey to me.

Thank you so much everyone.  I have lots to go on there.

The Boswell/Bonner connection is interesting.  Lots more research to do now!

Thanks again

Karen :)

I think the Susan that Karen is referring to is the one above the Susan Lacey/Lucy. There is a Susan a couple of lines above...and the surname is non-existant....I could not even guess what it might be....other than to trace all of those family members with an unreadable surname in the same household.

I'll get the image and post it.

Added...sorry..it won't let me post the image.....grrrr
