Dog House, Rushlake Green
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Last night I was looking at the census details for my great x4 grandmother, Rosina Tedham (born 1789 Brightling) when I discovered that in 1841/51 and 61 she was living at the Dog House/Farm. In 1861 she was living with her son Robert and her granddaughter Margaret Bourner.

As she died in 1877 I have been trying to find her on the 1871 census but with no luck and was wondering if anybody else could come up with anything.

The reason I am curious is because my dad was born at one of the houses at the dog house. There is only one house now, but there used to be two.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Paula

Ancestry have a "Rosannah Fulham" listed in 1871, but looking at the image, it is much more likely to be Tedham.

The reference details are: RG10/1045 Folio 20 Page 4

The town was Rushlake Green, but the address is indecipherable.

She was listed as aged 82 and listed as born in Warbleton, and was living with her 40 year old son Robert, who was a gardener.

Hope this helps

Glen

Hi Paula and Glen

I have just had a look at the 1871 entry and I think she is ditto to Foulmile a couple of entries above.

Foulmile is on the road south between Rushlake Green and Cowbeech and funnily enough I have just driven down it an hour ago on my way home!

Kerry

Modified - sorry I mislead it says Foulmile and the next entry says Dog and then ditto for next entry and then again ditto for Rosannah Fulham, so it is ditto to Dog.

Hi to you both

Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated. I had looked through the census and failed to find the Dog House, I think because of the ditto. Sometimes when you have been looking at the screen for a while the images blur.

It is definitely her, when I told my dad that there had been a member of the family living in the house where he was born that long ago he way really surprised. All his brothers and sisters were born there and he lived there until he was a teenager so it was a really interesting find for me.

Thank you both once again.

I notice that you have Harmer's in your tree. They appear in my tree, although quite far back, the first one I come to is Mary Harmer (1764) who married Samuel Burchett they were my gx4 grandparents.

Hi Paula

I don't have her on my tree, do you know who her parents were or where she was born?

My Harmers at that time were in Wableton and Heathfield.

Hi

Her parents were William Harmer (1701 Chiddingly) and Ann Buckwell (1718 Herstmonceux). Their children included Mary and several siblings all born in Herstmonceux.

I remember a girl at school called Harmer and since doing my family history I have often wondered if I was related to her. I have discovered a link with someone else I was at school with (share the same gx3 grandparents), it's a small world isn't it. I wished I still lived down that way, it would be easier for carrying out any research.

Hi Paula

I shall keep a record of those names just in case I find a link, I bet they are linked to my line somewhere.  This part of the world seems to be full of Harmers and everytime I see one I think I must be related to you!
