Heap surname

Does anyone have any ideas as to where the surname Heap originally comes from? I've always thought that it originated in Lancashire, but have never been sure, and haven't really known where to start researching. As a former Heap, I've always been fascinated in finding out where my line may have started. Are there any other fellow Heaps out there???

Hi Elfen,

According to National Trust Names - http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/ - the Heap name seems to originate in Lancashire.  There were more of them there in 1881 than anywhere else in England.

I have a few of them in my tree who came from Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs.

Arkay
Travis, Earnshaw, Wild, Hibbert, Warren, Leech - Ashton-under-Lyne
Mills, Fallows - Middleton
Pryce, Evans - Welshpool, Mgy, Wales
Davies - Criggion, Shropshire
Whittaker, Evans, Benussi - Liverpool
Price, Whittaker - Great Crosby
Atherton - Frodsham, Cheshire
Riley - Huddersfield area, Yorkshire

Hi Arkay,

Thank you very much for your reply. That gives me a starting point. I haven't traced my Heap relatives back to Lancashire just yet, maybe further down the line!

Elfen.

Hi there

I have Heapy ancestors, although the name does seem to be interchangeable with Heap/Heape/and Heaps.

The farthest I have gone back is 1792 to Quarnford Staffs.

My gt grandma Emily Heapy was born in Macclesfield in 1867.

All the best

Carol

Hi Carol,

My search started in the West Midlands and Staffordshire, and the further back I go leads to Leicestershire from the early 19th century backwards. Have you any ancestors from Leicestershire?

Elfen.

All my Heaps come from Yorkshire - all the books I've read, except one, relate it to Heap Bridge a place in Lancashire however although I was 'physically' born in Lancashire I lived in Cheshire and the Heap relations were very Yorkshire orientated so I have never really liked that description. The derivation I favour I read in a book at the Society of Genealogists (I live in the South of England now)  that it related to the Hips of the Wild Dog-Rose tree(Rose-Hips) and they probably lived close to one - even the name of Heap Bridge could have been the Bridge next to the Rose-Hip Tree.
My maiden is also Heap, Elfen.
Heap - Holmfirth WRY
Rhodes-Flockton WRY & NE Cheshire
Ridgway- NE Cheshire & Lancahire
Roebuck - Upperthong WRY
Wild - NECheshire
Riley - NE Cheshire & Derbyshire
Greaves - NE Cheshire & Lancashire

Hi Mumsie,

I haven't found any Yorkshire or Lancashire Heaps as yet. Thank you for letting me know the derivation of Heap that you found. I like the sound of that origin too. I'm hoping that I can trace the Heap line back to where it should have originated, but that's a long way off yet!

I have Heap in my son's tree, his g.g grandmother. I have gone back a couple of generations, all from Leicestershire so far, although a bit of illegitimacy is throwing me at the minute.

Let me know if you would like to know more.

Tx

Hi Sparkle,

I have traced some to Leicestershire also. They are quite a few generations back though. Can you tell me when abouts your son's Heap ancestors were living in Leicestershire?

Elfen.
