Uncle-in-law?

Hi

I have the following family in the 1901 census:

John Whitton, H o H, M, 25
Comfort Whitton, Wife, M, 29
Ethel Whitton, Daur, 3
George Whitton, Grandfather, Wid, 78
Mary Lilley, Mother-in-Law, M, 48
Joseph Whitton, Uncle-in-law, S, 46

I'm confused as to how an Uncle-in-law could have the same family name as the Head of Household.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Perhaps it is a mistake and should say uncle?

Or, maybe mother in law's maiden name was WHITTON?  It's possible

In those days, "in-law" also meant "step" (though it was being used less often by 1901)  so, in effect, it could also mean step mother and step uncle - that would make it even worse wouldn't it

I'm sure furthering your research into them will sort out who they all are:D

Have you traced them on the earlier census to try and sort it out

I'm interested in this family because if it's the right one then George W would be a direct descendent.
However, the 'uncle in law' intrigued me.
I think you may be right - mother's maiden name is the more likely.
I'll keeo digging!

Thank you for your posts.
My starting point was the 1881 Little Lane, Pemberton family, as my ancestor here is Ann Whitton, 9.

Your posts have sent me back to look at the original image of the 1901 census and it's now clear that George Whitton and Joseph Whitton are actually Whetton - this clears it up, and gives me a new line to look into!

Little lane was my starting point. Sarah ann whiiton b 30.5. 1881 daughter of John 22. 8. 1853 lower gornal married Elisha brookes m Mar 1904. They lived little lane as well
