LILLIES - Bellasdaro ? (posted on behalf of Bosmer)

Posted on behalf of Bosmer

Hi,

This is my first post and I’m not sure where to put it! I am researching the LILLIES branch of my family. George Lillies married Eliza Simpson around 1838.  They emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1847. I’m trying to find out where in Ireland they came from. My only clue is from IGI, it says that Eliza was born in, and married George in ‘Bellasdaro, , , Ireland.’  I would like to ask if anyone has heard of this place.

Thank you for your time!
Deb

Is the IGI record an extracted entry or a submitted one?

Found the entry and it's a submitted one. Bellasdaro sounds like someone tried to spell the name of a place in Ireland the way they thought it sounded. Probably Bally___ or Balla___ but that doesn't narrow down the options much.
Have you tried searching for a newspaper obituary, death certificate, local histories or other Canadian sources?

Thanks aghadowey!

I agree that it must be a Bally, etc. I have found a death registration in a Canadian online source. Very limited details! I think I will have to order a copy in order to find out where my Lillies came from. This is my first forage into Irish waters and the number of parish's, townships, etc. is a little boggling!

Good one Jo...

Deb ...Welcome to rootschat!
Here is a George Simpson of Ballisodare / Ballysodare / regarding his will in 1805. In case it turns out he is an ancestor....or related in some manner. The information re: dioceses in Sligo ( yours is Diocese of Achonry) and all the other information available from the searches provided should prove interesting, if not valuable in some way.

Almost certainly this is the placename-also given as Ballysadare. The Griffith's valuation records of 1848/64 includes a Simpson and Lilly(sic) family for the parish. It's in county Sligo in the NW.
You can view GV records, which list heads of households by googling "failte romhat" and go to GV-the Sligo-then Ballysadare.

Thank you all for the excellent info!
I’ll check out all of these sites. I don’t have much info on the Simpson’s but I think  Eliza’s mother was a Gould so that should  help.
