1809 Dartmoor Prison opened for French prisoners during the Napoleonic War.
1812 American POWs taken in the American War were also put into Dartmoor.
1815 Repatriations began when the Napoleonic and American Wars ceased.
1850 Dartmoor commenced being used for convicts after lying empty for several years.
At one time the prison's population numbered almost 6,000. Many prisoners died and
were buried on the moor.

There used to be a collection of bone carvings done by the French POW's in Dartmoor on display in Torre Abbey, Torquay.

The used ordinary bone from the meat they ate and created the most wonderful items.  they do look like ivory but are simply bone.  They used to trade them for other items.
