Chapman, Aberdeen/Inverurie
« on: Friday 07 December 07 23:31 GMT (UK) »
 :'( Hi,
John Chapman 1828-1908, Rosehearty, Aberdeen & Mary McLeod 1824-1912, married in Inverurie 19/10/1848. John & Mary Chapman lived in Inverurie where he had a Tailors shop in the High Street. I have tried to trace John & Mary's parents, John's parents are not fully entered on D.C., listed as _____ Chapman & Christina (Looks like) Binnie (Bouine?) & Mary's parents? (illegitimate?) ________McLeod, Elizabeth Stephen,

Can anyone shed any light on the parents of John & Mary, or where/when they were born.

A descendant M. Chapman worked as a nurse for 11 years approx. Windsor Archive, for Prince Henry of Battenburg & Princess Beatrice in the Royal Household. This prompted my starting the neverending quest for family ancestors. Any help to break my brickwall down, appreciated.

                                                        Regards,
                                                              Dunmac.

Christina's surname is Birnie.  John was an apprentice tailor with an Alexander Birnie in Rosehearty in 1841.  No sign of the senior Chapmans.  :(

Way to go Little Nell, that was quick.
I had the Freecen 1841 census when John was an apprentice but did not think about who he was apprenticed to, or his family, must check things more closely in future. Will have a go at tracing Birnie family now. I had spent several days trying to make out that name on the document and must have tried hundreds of combinations, came close with Burnie.8)
                                                   Many thanks,
                                                           Dunmac.

P.S.  It was Marjory Chapman at the Palace, John the Tailor's son, John the Butcher's daughter.

P.P.S. Should mention  that ________Chapman was noted as Seaman or Fisherman on D.C.

:-\ Have 1841 Census from SP. now and before John Chapman's entry, Apprentice Tailor, 15y., with the Birnie family in Rosehearty/Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, there is noted another Chapman family, Robert Chapman, Wright, 55y. & Jean, 45y. with three children, Alexander, 16y., Isobel, 13y., Robert, 11y. On the next page is another two Chapmans, Alexander, Wright, 25y & Jean, 25y., & William, 2months, again Rosehearty. Have searched OPR Births, 10 years between 1820 -30, to see if I can find John. Found twenty John Chapmans but cannot match/choose  parents but only one Pitsligo birth to a Willam Chapman/Jean Geddes but 20/06/1823?

D.C. reads: 168/02 0670:
John Chapman, Tailor (Journeyman) (Married to Mary McLeod)
1908 July Fourth, 7h. 30 m. 23 Duthie Terrace, Aberdeen, M. 80years.
Parents: _______ Chapman Fisherman or Seaman (deceased).
Christina _______ previously Chapman, M.S.( looks like Buinie or Birinie) Birnie? (deceased).
Gangrene of Left Foot and Leg, 1 Month, AS Cert. by J.D. Wyness, M.D.
Mary Ann Chapman, Daughter and Inmate (Present)
1908, July 6th, At Aberdeen.
James Meston, Registrar.
Can anyone offer further help as I cannot work out relationships of the Chapman line.

P.S. Daughter & Inmate? Have seen this & Inmate several times in Aberdeenshire documents, does this mean in the Workhouse ? or worse?

hi pal,

wonder if christian is your christina, would explain why john was with his uncle alexander on the 1841 census, but still cannot see a marriage for chapman and birnie...

looks like the christian on the 1841 census marries john duncan in 1842 pitsligo and they appear in the 1851 census. he was a fisherman.

:) Hi Jo, Thanks a bunch, I'm more confused as ever now, trying to trace these haybale relationships in the N.E. is making me balder. Had just checked Christian Birnie marriages, only 2 in Pitsligo 18/10/1842 to John Duncan, 233/0030 0098 & 31/08/1806 for a Wm. Benzie. John Chapman was 15y. at 1841 Census so  John Duncan looks favourite there. Only 2 sets of Chapmans noted at Pitsligo for OPR Births, William Chapman & Jean/Jane Geddes & Robert Chapman & Jane/Jean Rae and only one John Born 1823 in Pitsligo to William, 233/0030 0016. Was my John  a Ba**ard son? and trained by a relative?
Thanks for all the Birnie information though still lost as to how it all fits together. Chapman line is full of strange interweavings, 1 Baker in Aberdeen gets married on the day his wife gives birth to their second child, parents all there as witnesses.
                              Confused,
                                       Dunmac.
P.S. John's wife Mary McLeod, had been married before( So I thought, wrong, never married.) and had a daughter Catherine Henderson on 1851 Census, next noted as a General Domestic Servant on all other later Census's? why not Stepdaughter?

P.P.S. Wife's maternal side has Younie & Ironside connections, Kingussie & Insh, Rafford, Morayshire.

There seem to be a lot of Chapmans about in Rosehearty and a number with the name Alexander.  There are a number of wills or inventories and testaments listed on ScotlandsPeople, but without knowing the relationships it is difficult to know which might be relevant.  I can't find a marriage for Christina Birnie.  The registers are supposed to be complete for Pitsligo.  Most puzzling.
