Farmer Christopher SPILLER in Devon
« on: Tuesday 11 December 07 18:05 GMT (UK) »
I have traced my mother's side of the family back as far as my great, great, great, great grandparents, Christopher and Ann Hill Spiller (nee Sweeting). Christopher was born in Membury, Devon in 1784 and died on 24th May, 1867, in Wrantage, North Curry. Ann was born in North Curry in 1784, but I do not know when she died. They were married in North Curry on 19th December, 1805. On the 1841 and 1851 Census's for North Curry, Somerset, Christopher's occupation is 'farmer'. I am not certain if William, born 1806 in North Curry is their son, though it would appear that John (date of birth not known) and James Hill, born in 1816, North Curry are. Can anyone please confirm this and whether they also had any other children? I would love to be able to find out who Christopher Spiller's father and mother were. Can anyone help please???

2 houses away, There is a George Spiller aged 26 with wife and family.

Ann Spiller had to have died between 1851 and 1861

In 1851
Christopher , 67 b Membury is living with Ann, 65 and a daughter, Ann Leaky, 22. James his son is a few 'doors' away with wife jesse and kids ..he is an Innkeeper. John Sweeting , 61, and his son Robert , 27 are 'next door'.

In 1841

Ann Leaky 10 ...This is Ann leaky the DAUGHTER in 1851

In subsequent censuses she is with John Spiller...Igi submitted says that they married ... But there is submitted record of Christopher being the s/o Robert and julia jane ...arrggggh ....it seems that I am confusing the issue.

Ann was born in North Curry in 1784, but I do not know when she died. Can anyone please confirm this and whether they also had any other children? I would love to be able to find out who Christopher Spiller's father and mother were. Can anyone help please???

Wow! A big thank you to you all for your help and information. I'm beginning to wonder now though whether Christopher and Ann Spiller were the parents of my gt, gt, gt grandad William Spiller. According to my records William was born in 1803 in North Curry, Somerset and died on 23 December 1858, aged 55, in North Curry. His wife Charlotte died on 14 January 1865, aged 63, in North Curry. Would anyone be able to tell me her maiden name and date and place of birth please? If Christopher Spiller married Ann Sweeting on 19 December 1805, how can they be William's parents? Can anyone find any record of them having a son called William? I'm getting really confused now. Can someone help me please???!!!

Hi

Is it possible that Christopher and Ann Spiller are the grandparents of your William....

Hi again

I have been trying to find the maiden name of Charlotte, without much success.

in 1841:
North Curry
William Spiller 35
Charlotte 30
Sarah 12
Charlotte 8
George 5
Benjamin 3
william 1
John  30........ William's brother??
John Stacy 20
all born in county

down the road ...we find:
William Spiller 70
Sarah 35....... possible sister  or sister-in-law of William??
Elizabeth 10

1851
North Curry
Rock Hill
William Spiller head mar 46 ag lab b North Curry\
Charlotte wife mar 45 b North Curry
George son 15
Benjamin  son 13
Mary Ann 8
Betsy 4
William 2

1861
North Curry
Rock Hill
Charlotte head wid 59 b N C
Charlotte dau 27 kid glove maker b NC
Elizabeth dau 8 b NC

So from this we can say that Charlotte was born in North Currey. Her age varies ...

I wonder if her children's names have clues as to her maiden name?

Hi

maybe the only way to go is to order a birth cert of one of their children , in order to find Charlotte's maiden name.

I think that these may be their children:

William Spiller~ Sept Q 1848 ~ Taunton ~ vol 10 p 452

Elizabeth Spiller ~ Dec Q 1857 ~ Taunton ~  vol 5c p 383

Mary Ann Spiller ~ June Q 1843 ~ Taunton ~ vol 10 p ...this is hard to read..it's either 434 , 454 , I think it looks like 464 ?? Maybe some could recheck.
