Good morning Annie,
Shakespeare and Ardwick rang some bells. Shakespeare St produced no hits, but somewhere at the back of my mind I remember attending a meeting so I tried Shakespeare Community Centre and found this

http://www.mancat.ac.uk/community/shakespeare.htm

It is located on Shakespeare Walk M13 which could just about be Ardwick. That area was pretty well knocked about in the 60\70's so perhaps there is an echo of an earlier street name there but I have no idea really ???

The link to streetmap.co.uk works so you can see it's proximity to Ardwick

And i've just found it on 1915 Godfrey map
 8)

It was in the location of the Shakespeare centre, so there is an echo of the name. It ran between Stockport Rd and Plymouth Grove. Do you want a scan of the map?

Have a great day
Cheers
Tony

Hi guys.

Tony has the right place for Shakespeare St. It was there up to 1970 or so, then replace by grim estate centred on Lauderdale Crescent. There was a huge pub called the Plymouth Grove Hotel on the corner of Plymouth Grove end of Shakespeare St that survived a few years longer; http://www.images.manchester.gov.uk   pic no. m19588

I'm pretty sure its all gone Annie    :(  Further south on Plymouth Grove is Elizabeth Gaskell's house which is preserved and has a blue plaque, but this bit was all redeveloped in the 70s- and is now being redeveloped again. I think this area is now the 'Plymouth Grove Village' referred to here:  http://www.grovevillage.co.uk/regeneration.htm.

School clinics aargh! Mine was in Levenshulme Town Hall as was, later antique market.. I was given the most unflattering NHS glasses in the world, not even the John Lennon sort - nasty white plastic frames  :P  And as for the verruca treatment (involved a large scalpel/scraping implement) I'm still wincing! Never got nits though, maybe the glasses scared 'em off  ;D
