Jounquay
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 10:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi, not sure where to start, but have been trying to research my family tree.  I know that grt grt grandfather Daniel Jounquay (i think after a little research) came from Middlesex, England as a convict to Australia.  My dad and I thought our descendants came from France.  I/we are curious to find out what he did to become a convict.  I am the daughter of Neville Joseph Jounquay born in Taroom Qld.

I hope someone can help or maybe know a little more than we do.

Thanks,
Theresa.

Hi Theresa - do you have some dates for Daniel, like about when was he born or when did he arrive in Australia?  On www.familysearch.org there's a Daniel Jounquay who  married in Queensland in 1849, father given as James.

http://www.sellwood.info/data/n_32.htm#0
 - mentions some more info about him.

There was an earlier Anthony Jonquay who was a convict in NSW, also.

www.familysearch.org shows a Daniel Jonquay born/chrs in 1797, whose parents were James and Elisabeth.  He might be a little too old to be yours, though.

1861 has a James and Martha Jounquay living in Bethnal Green Middlesex (21 Oakey St) James is 52 Silk Weaver b. Spitalfields and Martha is 51 Silk Weaver b. Bethnal Green RG9/261 Folio 14 Page 27

I believe the Huguenots were well known for settling in the Spitalfields area as silk weavers. If you "google" the words "silk weavers Spitalfields" quite a few pages come up.....

Thanks, he was born in 1810. My dad thinks he was a highway man who robbed stage coaches and was extradited to Australia (around 1828) age 18, but I haven't been able to find him on a convict list.

I know that this is an old post but thought I'd reply anways.  Daniel Jounquay was apparently my great-great-great grandfather.  I have just recently found this out since I started looking into my mom's Queensland roots.  Her mother was Mary Catherine Walsh who was the daughter of Alice Jounquay.  Alice Jounquay was the daughter of James Jounquay and James was one of the children of Daniel.

Hi Theresa and Jane,
We are distant relatives as Daniel Jounquay is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather.  I am descent from Daniel and Ellen's daughter Sarah Jane.

If you have not already found out (I know this is an old post), but Daniel was transported to Australia on board the "Waterloo" arriving in 1829.  His name was listed as Daniel John Quay.  The Jounquay surname has lots of variations - Jonquay, Junkaway,...  Daniel's crime was assaulting a Thomas Brooks at St. Leonard and stealing from him a purse, 5 sovereigns and a watch (you can see more information if you go the Old Bailey site- www.oldbaileyonline.org).

Hopefully you are still checking this site.
