I was born in 1946 and when I was eight years old my best friend moved to Durham City (so that was 1954). His name was Martyn Welch, and his parents Sophie and Leslie bought a house at 13 Gray's Terrace. Their neighbour was a Miss Featherstonehaugh. I remember meeting her, and was told that she was of the family that owned Featherstone Castle. She must have been in her eighties then, which means she may have been the Annie Featherstonehaugh born in 1871.
Her name must be on the electoral roll as resident at Gray's Terrace, and she would be at a house with a number approximately two numbers either side of No.13.
I always remember her name, as when I mentioned her namer in the south of England, I was corrected to Fanshaw. However, I was told that she was of the original family that owned Featherstone Castle, and that my pronunciation was correct.
Could this be a new lead? I think she lived in Gray's Terrace until she died. I may be wrong, but of course it was only a period of eight years later that we guys all left home to study and work in other parts of the world and I didn't keep abreast of events.
Please come back to me and let me know if this information is of any help. Thankyou!
