Scofield Family
« on: Thursday 03 January 08 03:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

This is my first posting on here - I hope you can help or point me in the right direction.

I am looking for the parents of Joseph Scofield . From the census 1841 - 1861 he consistently states he was born 1806 Coventry.  His occupation is carpenter and I have his marriage to Elizabeth Smith 1828 Leek Wooton from the IGI on familysearch. There are no records for a baptism for a Joseph Scofield 1806 on there.

How can I find his birth/baptism records?

Much appreciate any help you can give me.

Hello Anne & welcome to RootsChat
I think you need to look at the marriage details to find which Parish Joseph is from, also possible siblings as witnesses. If you email the War.CRO and give all the marriage details they will probably do this FOC.

Regards Jim
PS. Just as bit of extra info. Benjamin Smith Scolfield was christened in St.Nicholas Warwick and had a sister Elizabeth christened a year earlier who must have died as she doesn't appear in 1841.

Hi Jim and thankyou for your warm welcome,

Thankyou also for replying to my query.  I have 13 children for Joseph and Elizabeth and you are quite right when you say Elizabeth died as there is another Elizabeth down the line.

I will do as you suggest and try to find more info regarding the marriage. Will email War CRO right away.

Thankyou very much for your help

Anne

I have to say that there are very few Scofields about in & around Coventry. It seems to consist of a couple of related families.
I have this family:
Joseph/b.1782
Catherine/b.1784
Hannah/b.1786
Thomas/b.1788
John/b.1790/d.1798
All born Leek Wootton
Parents Joseph & Hannah Scofield
Joseph may be an illegitmate child of Catherine or Hannah.

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for you input.

I have come across that family you mention but never thought of the illegitimate angle. Joseph and Elizabeth had daughters Hannah (my 2x Gt Grandmother) and Catherine so the names fit. Will investigate .

Forgive my Aussie ignorance but is Leek Wootton part of Coventry? Would someone born in Leek Wootton say they were born Coventry?

I have emailed Warwick CRO and have received an automated reply saying they have passed my query onto the relevant dept.  So hopefully might have an answer from them next week.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks again
Anne

hi

just a thought have to tried an alternative spelling for scofield, try schofield.

i checked a couple of my discs and found some info you might be interested in

coventry apprenticeship record  -  22/11/1854   thomas scofield apprentice carpenter & joiner to Joseph scofield.

london road burials (coventry)  -  3 people in one grave

Grave 21  square 134  purchased by joseph scofield.

joseph scofield buried 24/8/1851, aged 1 year address gosford street
parish st michael.

joseph schofield (note spelling) aged 4months buried 18/8/1852 gosford street
parish st michael

mary adler buried 19/10/1865 aged 28, address brick kiln lane,  parish st michael.   ( i assume this is joseph's daughter as there is a marriage in 1857 to joseph adler)

i also have marriage details for benjamin and sarah if you want them.

Hi Julie,

That is all very interesting. Thankyou very much I have found the name spelt both ways

They are all my family . Joseph and Elizabeth had two sons (not much luck handing the Joseph name down) . I didn't  Know about Mary's marriage - cheers for that. And that would be Josephs son Thomas as they were both carpenter/joiners.

I would love the details for Benajmin and Sarah although son Benjamin Smith Scofield married Emma Hawley 1853. Wondering who this Benjamin could be.?

THanks very much

Anne

hi

sorry confused you there,  it was two separate marriages, although have found another that might interest you.  All marriages st michael's  (which incidentely is coventry cathedral)

sarah scofield married joseph clarke  feb 1853  address gosford street
father joseph
joseph clarke, weaver, batchelor, address gosford street,  father edward clarke labourer.
witnesses to marriage benjamin smith scofield and emma hawley.

3/9/1853 benjamin to emma   witnesses thomas hawley and maria brothers

benjamin aged 20 batchelor, carpenter, address st john street, coventry
father joseph.

emma aged 21 spinster, living cheylesmore (district in coventry)
father thomas hawley.

i don't know if this marriage ties in, but thomas scofield being a carpenter there has to be a connection somewhere.

2/12/1844
joseph scofield of full age, batchelor to emma maria birch, minor spinster.

joseph living much park street, father thomas scofield carpenter.
emma living much park street, father george birch, labourer.

witnesses edward william ambrose, & hannah ambrose

i had a look at the 1841 and joseph and family were living blackbank exhall , which is on the outskirts of coventry (very near me actually)  he states he was born out of county.

Hi Julie,

Thankyou very much for all that information .

I think that that last marriage for Joseph (father Thomas) is a cousin of my Joseph. They would have to be related wouldn't they?

The marriage of Sarah Scofield to Jos Clarke was on my list of cert to get.

While I have got you on here perhaps you could help me with a query. I have found Elzabeth Scofield(b1809) in the 1871 census , a widow with daughters. They have been transcribed as Defield but I am sure it is my family. The only thing is there are three Grandchildren with them,. I cannot for the life of me work out the surname (transcribed as Warwick ) but cannot find a marriage between a Scofield and a Warwick. Do you have a marriage for Scofield and Warwick ?

Have to go - my husband wants to go shopping. I dont want to leave pc. Aaaah must go.
