Lawler..............stuck
« on: Friday 04 January 08 11:25 GMT (UK) »
I'm very very stuck and do not know where to look next. Tried ancestry, IGI, and various others, so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light.

My g.g. grandmother is Julia Lawler, she was born abt 1844 in Ireland (data from several census records). It only ever states Ireland, no indication of a county unfortunately.

From her marriage certificate (Dumfries, 1874) it states her father was Michael Lawler, labourer (deceased) and Mother Catherine Bonn (presumably still alive in 1874).

It appears that Julia met her husband whilst working at the local lunatic assylum in Dumfries, Scotland.  There is no record of her on any census records prior to 1881 in Dumfries.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Tx

Have you checked in Scotland for any other Lawlers in the same area as Julia? Often families came from Ireland and stayed near each other.

 ;D

You are good. I had checked for other Lawlers in the area.... however I just had a thought and checked for Lawlors and then Lollars and struck gold. I've found Catherine, and a sister, also Catherine and a grandson, all close by.

Catherine (Burns not Bonn!!!) died 1877. And I now have a county... Carlow.

Howvere the Grandson and Sister were both born in Kildare, so it could be a good bet that Julia was also born in Kildare.

Sister Catherine married a Robert Grant in 1881.

So it looks like the move and misunderstanding of the accent is what has confused me!!

Wow... that was rapid... off to take it all in and celebrate ;)

Tx

Stay online for a few more minutes if you can - saw something earlier which might help and will look for it now.

Right- thought 'Bonn' didn't sound right and came across this one which might be connected to the family:
John Lawler born 13 July 1865 Athy, Kildare, Ireland, son of Michael Lawler & Catherine BYRNE (common variation of Burns in Ireland).

Thats fantastic. I hadnt thought of Byrne yet! I'm going to try searching for more children.

I just found a reference to a Julia Lawler on IGI b 1844, also in Athy, Kildare, however,  its for a marriage in 1865!?! Cant be the same person can it?

Julia Lawlor

Event(s):
Birth:  About 1844   Of Barrowhouse,Near, Athy, Kildare, Ireland

Marriages:
  Spouse:  Patrick Flemming
Marriage:  14 JUN 1864   St Michaels, Athy, Kildare, Ireland

The plot thickens....

Hi I'm hoping for some more enlightenment;

I've been on here thanks to Christopher a while ago:

http://kildare.brsgenealogy.com/

But its cost me a small fortune in birth records and I'm still no further along.

What I know now is the family is RC (which was a bit shocking for my masonic relations ::)  ;D)

I have been looking for:
Julia Lawlor/Lawler b. abt 1853 Father Michael, Mother Catherine Byrne
Catherine Lawler b. abt 1845 Father Michael, Mother Catherine Byrne
John Power b. 1869 Mother Catherine Power
Michael Lawler b. abt 1800
(Catherine Byrne b. abt 1805 Carlow)

And I'm pretty sure they were all (except Catherine Byrne) born Athy, Kildare.

I NEED some inspiration as I'm stuck and now skint.....

Thanks :)

Tx

p.s. is there anywhere I can share the birth records I have downloaded so at least someone gets some use out of them!
