Hello
I hope you can help. How many mines were there in Alfreton?

Sorry, I don't have an overview. There were quite a few. Your question is probably best directed to the local historian at the library in Derbyshire or as a separate topic in RootsChar. I don't live in the UK, so I have no specific local knowledge on this area to help you.
regards,
Mark

Hi Both
Don't know if you know but Greenhills Lane is actually quite a long road with one end actually in Riddings and the other end in Leabrooks (which is on the edge of Somercotes).  Both Riddings and Leabrooks are part of the postal district of Alfreton. The older terraced type houses are at the Riddings end - as you get toward Leabrooks the housing is newer - maybe 1940s and more recent. The Greenhills is part of an ancient road from Derby to Alfreton - known as the Green Way.  If you visit our local website you will see photos of the Riddings windmills which were located just off the Greenhills Lane.

As for pits - there were several -
The closest were
From the 1842 Commission into Child Labour in the Mines:-
There was one at Newlands - (Butterley Co) back towards Ripley
There was one at Summercotes (Somercotes) Butterley Co
Also Greenhill Lane Hard Coal Pit  & also a Soft Coal Pit
Also Furnace Coal - Greenhill Lane
