Here is the photo of The Commercial Hotel in 1890 that I got from The Bell Library in Dumfries. Unfortunately it wasn't a good one but I think you will notice the difference in the building!

Kind regards

 motherhen,

Didn't know it was called the Commercial Hotel back in the 1890's. One is never too old to learn.

I remember the cobbled streets back in the 50's. The fountain  still exists, today.

My G Grandfather had his plumbing business in English Street in the late 1890's and, this photograph gives me some idea of what it looked like back then.

Many thanks

I am glad the photo uploaded ok.

The Bell Library in Dumfries is very good for information. It is a few years since I have been there but the last time I was there they had a lady to help you with your family history who was very knowledgeable about the area. They also have lots of photos so you might get a picture of your grandfather's plumbing business.

I saw the fountain too when we were last there.

It was lovely to see the inside of the County/Commercial Hotel. Many thanks for that too.

Good luck with your research.

Kind regards

motherhen,

I doubt whether I shall get photographs of my G Grandfather's shop. Plenty of English Street, though.

You might like to see these.

These are wonderful. Are they of the interior of The County Hotel?

Thank you very much for posting them. My Uncle might remember the rooms as I am sure he went there as a child.

Hi Cupcake

Those are indeed photos of the interior of rooms at the County Hotel. My uncle Dan Maclachlan owned the hotel in the 1940's-1970's. My mother and  father also went to many dance held there. Aunt & uncle bottom row 3rd and 2nd from right

Mazzercat,

Thanks for the photograph.

Brings back memories of when I worked in Binns Department Store in the 60's/70's and we had our Annual dances in either the County Hotel or The Kings Arms, across the road. The lady 3rd from the left, middle row, looks familiar
