The Wise saga
« on: Friday 11 January 08 10:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Having spent many months trying to find George Wise born about 1780 in

Berkshire we now have a copy of a paper which records his Baptism as

2/3/1778 at South Fawley in Berkshire.

The paper also gave his parents marriage as George Wise Snr. of Netherbery

in Kent to Anne Wernam of Pakenham, Suffolk.

On the IGI there is the marriage 20/10/1768 at Pakenham Suffolk.

This has been checked with the Parish Records and the date is correct , the

names are correct and the marriage was by licence.  It states that Anne was

from Pakenham and George Snr. was from Wantage Berkshire.

Fawley is near Wantage but trying to find George Jnr.'s birth I found it on

Family Search with a suitable date for the baptism  about 5 months after the

birthdate we have.   But it states Baptised 2/8/1778 at FAWLEY HAMPSHIRE,

PARENTS WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH.  It is an extracted record.

It should read Fawley, Berkshire and parents George and Ann.

If anyone is going to the BRO please could they look up the birth of George

Wise born 2 March 1878 baptised 2 August 1878 in Fawley near Wantage,

Berkshire.

Ever hopeful,
Abiam

No it shouldn't, Fawley, Berks is not in the IGI - this is a record from Fawley in Hampshire. Wise is a common enough surname - the IGI record belongs to a different family (there are three siblings there as well).

Your George s/o George & Ann Wise was baptised on 8 Mar 1778 at Fawley, Berks according to the PR transcript.

 Hi Newburychap,

I think I meant I wanted it to read George and Anne not William and Elizabeth when I said "should read"!  Thank you for putting Fawley Hants out of the picture.

So, are the Parish Transcripts for Fawley available to you?

Regards, Abiam
