Cody family frm Coatbridge - dead end

My great grandfather was Francis Cody, married to Elizabeth Murphy. He was a sailor. He was still alive in 1904 as his details are on my grandparents (Henry Cody & Mary Ann Moses) marriage record. I can't find his birth or death details or their marriage details.  I can't find her death details but suspect she may have died either giving birth or shortly after around 1882, as my grandfather was brought up by his maternal grandmother Hanna Murphy. Can anyone help or suggest where I look next?  I've tried Censuses etc.

Hi, maybe he was born before 1855 when registration was compulsory in Scotland and have you tried using wildcards in your enquiries as many surnames change their spellings down the years.
