Robert Carlos Hardy
« on: Saturday 12 January 08 14:09 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help me with this, but I think it is really a longshot.

I am trying to find the birth of Robert Carlos Hardy, who according to the 1930 American Census was born in Aberdeen about 1887.

Family lore is that his parents were diplomats in the West Indies and then in America.

We do NOT know anything more about Robert except that his children were born in New Jersey and that he died in America in 1933.

Thank you for that.    I am not a member, but I think a distant cousin is and I have written to her asking if she would look this up for me.

I do appreciate you looking for me.

There is only one Robert Hardy birth registered in Scotland between 1885 & 1890 on Scotlandspeople

He was born in LUNNASTING, SHETLAND in 1885.

Not sure if he's your man or not.

Thank you for your reply.   It doesn't sound like my Robert Hardy as Shetland is a long long way from Aberdeen.   However, I will keep this in mind just in case.

Hi Eveline

Do you know the name of Robert's wife in America? There is this marriage entry in Manhattan:

Hardy   Robert C
Date of Marriage: Mar  22 1928  Manhattan
Certificate No. 7293
Bride's name: Perdew Alice G

When searching for births for Robert in Scotland, it is probably worthwhile searching the surname as Hardie as well, a more common variant. There is one entry coming up for births in Aberdeen area for a Robert HARDIE (without initial C for a middle name) between 1883-89:

1888   HARDIE   ROBERT   M   KEMNAY   /ABERDEEN   207/00 0029

From the 1891 Census, this Robert's parents look to have been a William (farm servant) and Janet ~ doesn't bode well for a diplomat's family....

I would probably look to America for confirmation of his parents' names (Robert's marriage/death certs) and then work back from there.

Have you looked for Robert and family in any of the earlier American censuses? You might want to put up a new post on the emigrants to the US board here on RootsChat where people with better access to these resources may be able to help:

I've just had a look. It doesn't say very much:

Robert Carlos Hardy on SS Maraval (?) from Port of Spain, Trinidad, July 6th 1916

Aged 36, Clerk, British, Residence - Port of Spain. Father R H Hardy Colonial Hospiltal, Port of Spain

So born circa 1880

Hi Irret  ;) I was just looking at this one (Baby Mary skills coming to mind!)

Eveline, your Robert looks to have been born in Nova Scotia according to the ship's manifest SS Marval 1916. Have at the Ellis Island site for full details www.ellisisland.org.  It's a two page manifest (pgs. 0679/80 - they are the wrong way round, 680 should be first then 679). There's quite a lot of info on it.

Regards.
