Dignum family, Brighton
« on: Wednesday 05 January 05 17:13 GMT (UK) »
HI

A new relative of my husband's family has just found us...very happy news! We are struggling with Charles Dignum b about 1809 and died October 9th 1849 at Little East Street Court, Brighton was married to Sarah? b Brighton. His occ was bulter. By the 1851 census Sarah and sons Charles, Robert and Ann were in Spitalfields. We can't seem to find any birth or marriage for Charles or Sarah we think perhaps he was from a Roman Catholic parish. This info comes from our new found relative which I am most grateful. Any help would be most welcome

Hi CC,

I have found these entries in the Sussex Marriage Index:

Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence dated 2 Apr 1836:
Charles DIGNUM, bach Brighton 21+ and Ann CHILD, sp Brighton 21+

This is the marriage itself:
Brighton, East Sussex 2 Apr 1836:
Charles DIGNUM, bach m Ann CHILD, sp botp (lic)

The index only goes up to 1837 and BVRI2 doesn't list any marriages for him after that time.  No baptisms are included in Sussex either. Don't know if this helps you.

Nell

Hi
Been doing my family tree for a long time, but now going down the Dignum line. I have got back to a Charles Dignum born in c.1844 in Brighton. He married Charlotte Reece in Bethnal Green London in 1866, but my searched in Brighton have drawn a blank. I wonder if he is the Charles you mention? any help would be appreciated.

When Charles married in 1866 his father is named as 'John' deceased (not Charles).

Also, when his sister Ann married she too states her father was named John.
