A bit more to be going on with.

As you wrote, William Alfred Edward Weller was born in 1897 (Sept quarter) and I can now add that free BMD also gives that place of Birth as Brighton.
I could not identify the Flora you mentioned as being born in Brighton, but the Ida I, 1917 and Marjorie N ,1921 (both mother's maiden name Harland) were also born in Brighton.

I suggest you therefore focus on "The Brighton Wellers," of which free BMD gives more than 100 born between 1895 and 1921.  But at least it's not thousands!

By the way, if you have found the family with only one child on the 1901 census, what address were they living at then?

Suggest another good contact to make is a Mr John Weller who also has an interest in both the Telscombe Wellers and the Stapletons from Kent.

John's details can be found on the Sussex Family History Group Website

Thank you everyone who has replied. sorry I haven't responded before but I have been pretty poorly, but now I can restart my quest.

I wasn't reticent about a place just forgot to add it!

I knew grandad was born in Brighton at 5 Grove Street 21/8/1897 and when I knew his mother in the 1950s she was living a 1 Picton street Brighton, from where I believe grandad married.

William Edward John Weller was born 1875  and when he married Maria Harland 25/12/1895 he was living at 37 Dinapore Street Brighton

William George Weller bn 1845 in Telscombe was living at 23 Thomas Street when he married Harriett Stapleton in Brighton 25/12/1868

William Weller bn 1809 in Preston Sussex (I take in to be Preston Village Brighton?) married Rachel Patching from Telscombe 5/1/1845 at Telscombe Parish Church

From there back it has been hard and a lot has been searching records and I may be wrong but

William Weller bn 1780 in Sussex m Susannah Wood bn C1750 (she was a widow when she married William) married 15/9/1802 at Chailey

John Weller bn 1735 Barcombe married Ann Taylor bnC1735 at Barcombe 31/10/1762

Thank you for some of the tips they have been really useful and they are gradually adding people to my tree.

Hi,

I have a Jane Elizabeth Weller living with my family of Warr's in Coleman St, Brighton in 1936 - it looks like there is also a Jane Elizabeth Warr, so perhaps the two families are connected? I am still in the early stages of this, so will let you know if I find anything about the Wellers!

Since the 1911 census arrived I have found that my grandad had more brothers and sisters, that survived, others I know nothing abouut.

My grandfather William Alfred Edward bn 1897 - 1971

                         Walter Horace Gerald bn 1904

                         Frederick Thomas bn 1907

                         Doris Violet Winefred bn 1908

                         Bertram Ernest bn 1911 - 1995

                         Flora L 1913 - 1929

                         Ida Irene bn 1917

                         Marjorie Nancy bn 1921

William married Louisa Mabel Wellman (known as Mabel) my mother Joan was the only surviving child of 5.
Bertram married a Blodwen Jones and moved to Wales and had a daughter Nadine.

I can see that this is a very old post, but I'm new to the site and was so excited to see my maternal grandmothers family details straight away! So I hope this finds it's way to Alesia, as it appears we are distant cousins ;D

My maternal grandmother is Ida Irene Davey (nee Weller)1917 - Sadly she died in 1993.
she married Robert Davey and my mother is their youngest of 5 children, Linda!
My grandmother had 5 children: Peter , Rose, Pauline, Susan bn 1949 and Linda bn 1952.

Ida said she was about 8 when their mother Maria died. But I can see from your post that you knew his mother in the 1950's? I was told her dad had married again soon after. She also spoke of Picton Street.

She would always talk fondly of her sister Flora, who died so young. She would talk about her Bert and her Bill, I met her sister Doris when I was a child in the 70's.

I have a picture from about 1918 of William and Maria with my grandmother as the baby on her mothers lap and the older children including their cousin Mary standing around their parents. I know that William Senior was a painter and decorator in Brighton.
