1851 Lookup

Looking for a Margaert Elizabeth Smith (sometimes called Betsy) who will have been about 17 in 1851 whose father was Robert Smith. Trying to find brothers sisters and mother, with possible address???

Do you have any idea what parish or county Betsy may be in?  As 1851 isn't available online it would take year to find them! LOL.

Unfortunately no......I only know she was born in Scotland from another census when she was living in London.

Keep an eye on Freecen as more of the 1851 becomes availabe. 

Also Scotlandspeople can search the whole of Scotland for births - but a Smith!!! It would cost you £s. 

Scotlandspeople are promising all the census online at some point this will help you but when is anyones guess!

There are actually very few extracted entries for Margaret Smith born 1834 +/- 2 years with father Robert on the IGI. Unfortunately none are listed as Margaret Elizabeth. There may be a few more on ScotlandsPeople, but my experience of the IGI for Scotland has been a fairly good coverage, so searching for them on ScotP would probably only return one page.

How you would determine which one is yours?? even if you looked at them all,  I have no idea.

I've had patchy coverage from IGI.  Oddly in Annan parish only female births are appearing on IGI?  No idea why.  Other parishes are excellent.

Hi Pam

There are quite a number of "Female only" batches on the IGI. There was quite a discussion of same on the now decimated ScotlandsPeople discussion group. The male births are in the LDS films (meaning lots of searching needed). Apparently the LDS were queried about why this happened but I don't think any defining reason was obtained.

Always wondered  .  I'm lucky in that I can get access at the local library but the trawl can make your arm sore!    Sorry Paul that was a bit of a hijack!
