Brickwall - Kilmurray/Kilmurry Convicts
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 21:16 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning fellow keepers of the past.
I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me in breaking down a brick wall.

I have my 5x Great Grandpa who was sent out to Australia as Convict in 1827 on board the ship Cambridge. He was said to be a labourer. Born in  Meath in 1801. His name is Denis Kilmurray.
He was tried at Trim on the 13th March 1827 for stealing a sheep (my very own Waltzing Matilda!)

I have previously been advised that apparently there was a name change (the person telling me this did not elaborate on why, or whether it was to Kilmurray from something else or from Kilmurray  to whatever)  I have noticed the variant spelllings of the name.  I have also noticed a mass exodus of Kilmurray's to various parts of the world - Scotland, Argentina, the USA and a whole host to Australia.

But back to Denis...

His death cert gives no extra clues as to his origins. I also have a number of other Kilmurray convicts I am sure are related given the rarity of the name, but have thus far not been able to "prove" .

Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction.
Kaz

Hi! I see this is old but Denis is also an ancestor of mine, I’m fairly certain. Any chance you’ve made progress?

Hi there
Good to meet another descendant.
How are you descended from our Denis?

In answer to your question,  no, no progress has been made- yet!
It is really strange, a number of family have done DNA testing, but have not made it back past any of his offspring.
I am becoming more convinced than ever that there was a name change or mis transcription - because I simply cannot find the. Man anywhere but in Australia.
Keep in touch.
Karen

My great grandmother was Vera May Kilmurray, her father was Edward Kilmurray who I’m fairly certain was the son of Denis - in Edwards obituary it says his father was Denis, but I’ve only just started looking into this branch of my family so haven’t found supporting documentation yet.

*all from the Hastings area - my mother grew up in Wauchope and Port Macquarie.

I read Denis was a convict before I found this post, however I haven’t found him on any convict lists.

Yes Edward was the son of Denis and Mary.
I have a tree on ancestry - public- if you want to have a look. Kaz_Robertson
Yes he was a convict, the name Kilmurray was spelt many different ways too-
He was on the Cambridge 1822.

Would you happen to have info on Edward perhaps?
I can’t find you on ancestry but i’m not super familiar with the site. I do have a tree on there, i’ll Have to find my username to give you.
If Denis is my 3rd great grandfather and your 5th, how related would we be?

Hi

When was Denis on the Cambridge?   Your last post states 1822, but you earlier stated:-
"He was tried at Trim on the 13th March 1827 for stealing a sheep"

Is there a Passenger List available and if so, what surname is used for Denis?

Cheers

Hi LH
My apologies the 1822 was a typo.  It is 1827!
 ;)
I have all his convict records and other info leaned from Australia, but nothing at all from Ireland.
