« on: Sunday 27 January 08 19:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Having trouble deciphering my rellie Richard Davies' wife's first name in 1891 and 1901, thanks to Ancestry has been transcribed as Lewrya and Lawysa ........ not very Welsh!! ;D ...... have yet to find a marriage for him so working out her name should make that job easier!! ....... hopefully!! ;D

1891 Ref - Piece: 2870; Folio 119; Page 9

1901 Ref -  RG13; Piece: 3379; Folio: 187; Page: 8

Any suggestions gratefully recieved!!

Sarah :)

Hi Sarah,

Well it does look like Lewiza/Lawisa - a daring version of Louisa maybe?  :P

Hi Sarah
Yes, the 1891 looks like Lewisa, the 1901 looks like Lauysa or Lawysa.  I love unusually spelt names!

Have you got birth certificates for Richard and L's children?  I see Robert c 1884, Edward c 1886 and Emily c 1888 in the 1891 Census; they should give you their mother's names including maiden name.  Just a thought.  Or parish records?

Kind regards

Well Sarah,in the absence of any possible nearer Marriage, there is the Marriage of a Richard Davies and a Louisa Jones in the Chester Registration District,in the July Quarter of 1882.The GRO Ref is Volume 8a Page 587.It would fit with the age of the eldest child.

Hi

I think both the 1891 and 1901 enumerate her with a y in the name. Note she apparently also only spoke Welsh.

There is a Louisa JONES, dau of John in the 1881 :
RG11 -  Piece: 3567 -  Folio: 5 -  Pg 6

in the same  township, Uwchymynydd Ucha - which  Richard's wife gives as her POB  on the 1901 Census. And the same township they are in on 1891.

Cheers

Dear All

Thank you all so very much!! ........ ;D  ;D  ;D

I need to order Richard and "Louisa's" son Edward's birth cert anyway so hopefully her maiden name will come back as Jones, might as well order their marriage cert while I'm at it and if her father's name is John I should be sorted!!!  ;D

Cheers

Sarah :)
