CARBIS family
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 20:24 GMT (UK) »
I am am seeking help on a member or members of the Carbis family.
All I know is that James was born in Cardiff c1925 and died in 1957 he lived in Milton Street Cardiff married to Olive
His father was Walter Carbis, but no details.
I am not sure if it was Walter or his father that came from Cornwall, but there is a rumour in the family that Carbis bay has something to do with them.
Any help whatsoever I would be truely grateful.

This looks like James' birth registration

July 1925
James Carbis Cardiff 11a 645 mother's maiden name Quirk

I will see if I can find a marriage of a Walter Carbis to a Quirk.

Marriage
Dec 1920
Walter Carbis Cardiff 11a 1034 Spouse Quirk
Spouse is Annie Quirk

This looks like the first child (Free BMD)

Births Jun 1921
Carbis  Annie   Cardiff  11a 848 Mother's Maiden name Quirk

If you buy Walter's marriage certificate it will give his father's name and occupation and confirm that the 1901 census family is yours.

:D Thanks very much indeed.  :D

This is a great start and one that has brought back a few bells ringing in the distance with my wife and her family. :o
Quirk was a name definitely mentioned at some time though it was not known who it was, and also Bessie was thought to be the possible name of a Grandmother, but as my Wife's mother has passed on it is difficult to find a relation who remembers much.  :-\

Your info ties in with info from another Lady (Welsh Lady) and you both seem to know the business as you have given the same advice which sounds the best avenue to follow.  :)

I will definitely take your advice about the cert and see what materializes. :o

Hello Peter

I was hoping that some names might evoke a few memories.  :)

I have had a quick look at Richard, the potential father of Walter Carbis and can see him in several censuses.  It looks like his father was Benjamin T Carbis - he was a Master Mariner in 1871 in Cornwall and an unemployed  Mariner in Wales in 1881.

You can view the 1881 census free on ancestry.co.uk or on familysearch.org

When you get the marriage certificate I am sure we can get you back quite a lot further.

I think I need to research the origin of the surname Carbis!

Hi,

Walter and Annie were also my wife G/parents making Annie her Nan as well.

Her father was James one of their sons.

I have only found  James Annie Hazel Beatty Nancy Mary and Walter as their children.

Who were your parents?

My wife's sister's husband also has Quirks as Grand Parents, but we cannot yet trace who they are, or if related, but the signs are good.  Strange world.

My tree is posted on GenesReunited.co.uk which is a free site to join and I have found it invaluable in my researching.

Perhaps we can swap details.

Catch you soon.
