Alexander CROMBIE
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 12:11 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a marriage for Alexander Crombie as well as his baptism. He was originally from Phesdo, Kircardineshire.
According to sources, he succeeded in ownership of Thornton Castle.  He had a son Alexander in 1872, and a daughter Eleanor, who I think never married. Alexander eventually emigrated to England, where he married Mabel Mary Cookson, the daughter of the Rev O Cookson of Holbeck.  They emigrated to South Africa and he died in 1925 in Rhodesia.

If anyone can assist me I will be greatly appreciative.

Regards
Jackie

You are not pushing it  ;D I was just trying to get my head round the family!

These are the other siblings to Alexander:

2. MARY CROMBIE  Birth: 02 JUN 1835/ Christening: 20 AUG 1835 Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland
4. FRANCIS CROMBIE Birth: 25 JAN 1838/ Christening: 11 MAY 1838 Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland

I'm sure you have the family in Tonbridge Wells in 1841, but I'll put the entry down just in case:

Alexander Crombie, Ind, 40, born outside the County
Mary, 30, b. Scotland
Mary, 6, b. Scotland
Alexander, 4, b. Scotland
Frances, 3, b. Scotland

Now, Alexander Snr. looks to have died just after this census. From Will & Testaments on SP:

Crombie   Alexander   01/01/1841   Revd, Doctor of Laws, residing at York Terrace in parish of Saint Marylebone in county of Middlesex and of Phesdo in county of Kincardine   Inventory; List of Arrears of Rents; General Disposition   Stonehaven Sheriff Court   SC5/41/8 ~ there are more entries relating to his estate

Also from SP Wills & Testaments, there are numerous entries for son Alexander estate following his death, such as:

Crombie   Alexander   05/10/1877   esq., of Thornton, county of Kincardine, d. 22/07/1877 at Cheltenham, testate       Stonehaven Sheriff Court   SC5/41/25

I'll have a look now for the next generation.

This looks to be Alexander b. 1836 in the 1871 census in Scotland:

Alexander Crombie Jun    34, Waster To The Signat (! trans.) b. Marykirk, Kincardineshire
Elizabeth Crombie 19, England
Margaret Diffie 28, servant
Anne Dunne 14, servant
Harriet Russell 54, servant
Jane Towns 22, servant

Address: Thornton Castle, Marykirk, Kincardineshire

I wonder if the marriage took place in England and not Scotland. There is this entry which may be a possibility:

Marriages Sep 1870
Crombie    Alexander       Glendale    10b   507
Marshall    Elizabeth     Glendale    10b   507

Do you have the name of children Alexander and Eleanor's mother to be able to confirm some more details? Were they born in England?

Regards.

Oops, Alexander b. 1836 didn't die in 1877 as I thought, was it his father then? I think I'm getting confused with generations & Alexander Snr.s  ::)

From the 1881 Census:

Alexander Crombie 44, Writer To The Signet (!), b. Marykirk
Elizabeth Crombie 29, b. England
Alexander Crombie 9, b. Edinburgh
Eleanor E Crombie 6, b. Marykirk
Josephine Christensen 32, servant
Mary Murray 19, servant
Jane Porterfield 23, servant
Christina Strachan 29, servant
Mary Trotter 45, servant
Annie Wilkie 25, servant

Address: No 4 Magdala Pl, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

That marriage entry in England looks good. This looks like son Alexander's birth:

ALEXANDER CROMBIE  Birth:  22 DEC 1871  Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents: ALEXANDER CROMBIE  and ELIZABETH MARSHALL

To same parents:

ELEANOR ESTHER CROMBIE   Birth: 10 JUN 1874 Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland

Elizabeth Marshall looks to have died relatively young at the age of 34 in 1885 in Marykirk. If you decide to look at her death cert. on SP, it will include full details of her parents and mother's maiden name.

Not sure what happened to the family in 1891. I think I can see Alexander, husband, boarding in Edinburgh and showing as farmer, age 54, born Marykirk but can easily as yet find children Alexander and Eleanor.

Phew Monica, this is just so great!
Thanks so much.  I really appreciate it.
They seemed quite a well off family. I know that the Alexander B1871 married Mabel Mary Cookson, and I have from there.  However, I don't have them in the 1901 census.  I think they were in England at that stage, as they were married in 1899 in Essex. I am trying to see when they came over to South Africa.  Some sources say 1901 and yet on find my past, it has Alexander coming over in 1903.
There were so many Alexander Crombie's it gets so confusing ???

Regards
Jackie
