NAAS - what does this mean please?
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 09:52 GMT (UK) »
I have a relative's soldier service book from 1942.

It has all her personal details, then for 'approved society' it says N.A.A.S and a membership number.
Then for 'enlisted at' it says ATS for period of present emergency.
There is also a note which reads 'A&S Group 47C'.

Just wondered if some knowledgeable person could give me a hand, please.

Jojo

(These book ad's are very odd; in your query, the words 'present emergency' come up in blue; when you hover over it, you are offered the chance to buy a book about hall marks on silver !)

The approved society section is actually for insurance purposes...My fathers AB64 pt1 in this section states "Prudential"

ATS is Auxiliary Territorial Service the womens service, forerunner of the WRAC...

The A&S gp 47c is probably to do with level of call up, but could you scan the relevant page for us pse?

That's interesting - insurance.  It makes sense now - although NAAS doesn't give much of a clue, does it?
I'll try to attach the scan - seem to be having some problems at the moment.

Thanks!

I just thought I would share what I think is the most likely match for NAAS.
From this website:

http://tinyurl.com/ytcyt3

The Dental Practice Board
The background to the creation of the Board was war-time Britain.  The National Amalgamated Approved Society (NAAS) was evacuated to Eastbourne from London to an old school building.  It processed claims for benefits, mostly dental, and paid dentists for items of service.  Almost all the clerks were female as the male staff was at war.

Thanks for the help...
