Trying to locate birth place - Janet MacInnes
« on: Friday 01 February 08 12:03 GMT (UK) »
Good afternon to you all,

I am currently investigating my father's roots from North Uist, and have discovered my Great Great Grandfather, John Maclean (b 1803) of Hougharry, NU, was married to a Janet MacInnes who was from the 'Small Isles' which I understand to be Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna ??? Try as I might, I can't seem to pin her down on these islands.

On Janet's death cert, in NU, 1879, it states she was aged 67, making her birth year circa 1812, her father listed as Lachlan MacInnes (dec'd, Ag Lab.) and mother Catherine MacInnes (nee 'Macdonald' - dec'd). I imagine Janet's parents to be born circa 1780s.

Janet married John Maclean in 1830 in NU, so must have left home at a relatively young age, and I was wondering if anyone could kindly assist me in locating which one of the Small Isles, Janet would have been born on.

Kindest regards

McVitie :)

McVitie :)

Can you give us a reference to how you know Janet MacInnes was from a "Small Isle?"

I just wondered if there was no specific island mentioned in a census?

Janet married John Maclean in 1830 in NU

What source gives the marriage year as 1830?

Do you know what area of NU the marriage took place as it would state it on the entry?

What were the names & birthdates of their kids?

When did John die?

I found info. on a couple sharing the same names (John MacLean & Janet MacInnes) but nothing ties in with the couple you have  ???

Hi Anne Marie

My apologies for not having replied sooner, only have just received a notification that you had posted recently.

A bit more detail re John and Janet's family:
Married - 1830 (the only source I have for this is a helpful chap called Blair MacAulay who has done a fair bit of research of NU families). It tends to fit with the birth of their first child (although that's not a given I know :))
Children:
Ann b 1832-?
Charles 1834-74
Donald 1836-37
Donald Allan 1838-after 1851
Alex 1840-43
Catherine 1843-44
Alex (my gt grandfather) 1845-1901
Lachlan 1844-1906
Christina 1851 - after 1871
Angus 1854-57

John Maclean's death cert states he died on 16/02/1855 in Houghary NU. The family are also mentioned in Bill Lawson's Croft Histories, vol 1 on pages 118 and 131 which also refers to Janet's birth place as Small Isles.

I hope this helps - I'll keep looking for any other material I have in my box files.

Cheers
McVitie

There were several MacInnes/is families on the Isle of Rum and Eigg in the 1764-5 Census of the Small Isles. Many of those on Rum eventually immigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada when Rum was cleared in the 1820s.

Unfortunately there are no parish registers for the Small Isles so if the marriage took place there you are likely not going to find a record of it.
