Victorian (?) medals
« on: Saturday 09 February 08 10:05 GMT (UK) »
Firstly I apologise for the poor quality photograph but it is all that I have at the moment as this image has just surfaced from a distant cousin.

Can anyone throw any light on the medals for me I believe that the original photograph was taken in the late 1890's or early 1900's

Hi Falkyrn  :)

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm sure I recognise the one on the far left as the Crimea Medal, with two clasps...

Could second from right be a China medal?  i.e. Opium wars?

Thank you for that I have now been reading up on the Crimean Medals and it would appear to fit ...... the age is just about right and would make this gentleman my Great (x3) Grandfather

Hi,

I am no expert either but agree that could be the China War medal, but what bar? Taku Forts, Defence of Legations or Relief of Pekin.
The ribbon is crimson with yellow edges.

Far right, the only one that I can get close with is the India medal and perhaps the ribbon has faded from crimson and green vertical stripes. Awarded from 1895 to 1902.

Probably talking out of my hat, but trying to help.

Hi Falkryn,
Why not give us a name and (hopefully?!) we can confirm his entitlement for you.
I have some medal rolls for the Crimea, Indian Mutiny, China and others.

They are (l-r) Crimea Medal with clasp Sebastopol and one other (Alma, Inkerman or Balaklava); Turkish Crimea Medal; Second China War Medal with clasp Taku Forts 1860 or Pekin 1860; Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
