Hi HSusan

Was your grandmother Robina Brodie Cooper, daughter of Thomas Cooper and Margaret Brodie? If so, then your grandparents were first cousins as James Brodie b 1842 and Margaret Brodie b 1853 were both children of John Brodie and Ann Brown.

We are definitely related lol.

Hi AKC

Did you happen to find a headstone or M.I. for a John Brodie b 1762, husband of Euphemia Miller? He would have died after 1841 (he appears on the census for that year aged 75)? He was the father of the John whose MI you mentioned you'd found before.

Many thanks

Sorry it has taken me months to look into this - I'm just back from a trip to Orkney where I had a great chat with a cousin of my fathers. Her grandmother was Margaret Miller Brodie (my Great Grandmother), Robina's mother. I've now a copy of a picture of Margaret and she looks rather like her nephew James (my grandfather - it's the Brodie mouth when I compare it to gran and granda's wedding photo and my father!). Sadly I didnt make it to Stronsay but apparently there's no one on the Cooper side there (not sure about the Brodies). I'd love to make contact with any descendents from James Brodie's(my grandfather) first marriage to Catherine Doick. THere was a son James (Jim) who we believe went to the Isle of Wight and did keep in touch with my father's brother but then we have all lost touch. I'd also love to hear again from any Brodies descended from any of the Jameses.

Hi Tracey
My ggg grandmother was Ann Brodie, the elder sister of your James Brodie I believe.
Ann was the first born of John Brodie and Ann Brown. James was the second born.
Ann Brodie married William Seatter and their second born, George Seatter, went to NZ in the late 1800s.
The first child of William and Ann, also named Ann married John Shearer and they built the house Seaview in Whitehall village. I believe they had no children. In their later years William and Ann Seatter lived at Seaview.
The gravestones of William and Ann Seatter and John and Ann Brodie stand side by side in the Holland Farm Cemetery on Stronsay.

An update of what I wrote yesterday. In fact my records show there was an older son John who died at age 25. He is recorded also in the Holland Kirkyard. There were at least two younger brothers after James, namely Robert and David. I believe that George Seatter went to NZ at least partly because two of his Brodie uncles were already there.

Hi Murray

Thanks for the info on the graves of the Brodies.

Are you aware that there Ann was not the eldest? There was a daughter Isabella b.1835. She married Stewart Stevenson and died in Arrowtown, NZ in 1923.

David Brodie went to NZ IN 1884 and his niece Frances Flett Stevenson went to housekeep for him.

Glad to hear from you x

Hi Tracey
No I had not fitted in Isabella. I have been focusing on the Seatter side. That is good information.
My George Seatter clearly followed his uncle David Brodie out there (or went with him?). At different stages this George was the hotelier at Frankton and at Bannockburn. There is a brilliant picture of that hotel at Frankton in the current Frankton hotel. George had three daughters, hence this branch of the Seatter name stopped there. A descendant of David Brodie, Mr Bob Fowler passed away in Christchurch this year.
I have a few post cards that were sent from Ann Brodie out to NZ in the early 1900s.
Cheers

Just revisiting this Brodie connection.
It seems that Isabella (who married Stewart Stevenson) went out to NZ at some time prob with family ... son James is also buried at Arrowtown ... and Stewart and Isabella are both buried at Arrowtown. Also David and Robert Brodie went to NZ. My great grandfather George Seatter (son of Ann Davidson Brodie who was sister to the three that went to NZ) also went to NZ. Does anyone have any dates of the emigration to NZ, Tracey indicated that David went in 1884. Does anyone know what ships they went out on.  I am still trying to work out when George arrived in NZ.
