Anybody come across the name POOPEE?
« on: Saturday 08 January 05 21:48 GMT (UK) »
One of gt grannies many (4 actually) husbands was a Wilhelm POOPEE, a seaman by trade, living in London.  None of us ever knew this side of the family but it has been suggested by a niece and nephew of hers that he was a Polish or Russian immigrant.  They were pensioners who married in London during WW2.

Does anybody know the origins of this name or is it a variant of something else?

We're not particularly interested in tracing the name at this stage, just curious.

The only thing I could suggest is that Poupee would seem to be French for "Doll". Probably nothing to do with your name though.

Hi Calalguidi!

A Google search was not illuminating (not in the sense I intended, anyway!!)

Have you seen

Hi
I'm not sure but the name sounds Dutch to me.  A possible variation could be Poope.

To confuse or highlight the search for the surname Poopee
ANNE POOPEE - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Female Marriage: 04 JUN 1688 Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England

So the name is known in England from at least the 1680's, but my guess with the forename is that it is Dutch or German

Thank you all for your interesting replies.

Arranroots - yes, I have seen that post - I put it there!  It's nice to see that people are looking out for me though  :D

Though marriage and death cert. list POOPEE, I have a copy of his signature which I am not too convinced about so will have to learn how to post/attach images when our pc comes back (I hope it does) after it goes away for "repair" tomorrow.
