Hi Victoria, i personally use my hi-fi (with seperate amp, tuner cd player etc) which i have connected to my pc. I have put cassettes, vinyl lp's and 7"singles on to my pc and turned to MP3.
I see that now days you can buy a cassette player (i saw one in Argos for £80) that will plug into your pc and do it all for you, which may be worthwhile if you have a lot of tapes.
You need a 3.5mm male stereo plug to 2 rca male plugs cable, not at all expensive and come in different lengths. You will also need some software to do the recording, you will have some on your PC but there are better ones for free on the net. Audacity is a popular one  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ and its free. I use Magix Audio cleaning lab which was about £25.
Anything i have missed just ask.

I presume you mean a cassette tape, one of those old C90 audio cassettes?

I transferred data from an audio cassette to a CD a few months back.

You can use the headphone socket on your amplifier - or if you have a separate cassette deck with a headphone socket then you can use that, but the sound quality from the amplifier headphone socket is usually better.

I used a headphone extension cable, as my amplifier is a long way from my computer.  You need to then to plug a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor into the other end of the headphone extension socket and plug the 1/8" plug (stereo mini plug)into the sound card of you PC.  There are 3 sockets on the back of the sound card, the top one is for speakers OUT and I think the middle one is a microphone input.  I think I used the bottom one.  You'll need to check which one to use.

When the wiring is sorted out you will need some software to save the sound to your hard drive and then write it to CD.  I used Polderbits which is free for a trial period of 2 weeks.

Don't bother with Windows Sound Records as it is only designed to handle small sound bites, not long recordings.

Look around the back of the PC and there should be a metal strip with 3 tiny holes in it.  If you have separate speakers then follow the speaker cables to where they are plugged in and that is you sound card.  There should be little symbols etched into the metal below the holes to indicate whether you should plug an input or output device into them.

I gave audio tape to my son so he could sort it out. Too complicating for me, I did not want to damage my pc for one tape.

Thanks for asking.

I know this is old thread, but I now have similar problem to OP, and wondered if anyone had any experience of current transfer / conversion software compatible with Windows 10?
