Left side of page :-

New " ?? 8548 to Pembroke 6 Jan 19
NL 2 5742/16
MC  6731/16
Disciplinary action taken by the Captain of HMS Gibraltar in reprimanding (this man )for easing down his engines without orders on the occasion of the Collision between Steam Pinnace HMS Gibraltar, & the D Lord Dunwick.  1st Feb / 16.

Right side of page:-

Traced Pens  3/3/15
New " ?? 8548 to Pembroke 6 Jan 19
? Placed in Mess ??? (Possibly Bdle)  22/1/19
(1) Over 3 yrs  28/1/19
? Placed in Misc or Mess Bdle  10/2/22
? 25 ? returned and placed with (roughs)

SC ?? 959 ??         29/3/23

In other words your man throttled back on the boats engines to lessen the speed of the  Pinnace which was probably about to collide or narrowly miss the Lord Dunwick  and he did it without permission. probably endangering the crew in the Captains eyes.

I know that Pembroke in those days was at Chatham and used for training the engine room staff.

I wonder if the D Lord Dunwick was a Destroyer, will have a Google.

Oh yes !   Well done  :D

It looks so obvious after someone has told you.

What is the word after 'reprimanding' ?

The right side is more of a problem i think.

Thanks pjbuk007

Have amended my first message anything in bold letters I am unable to read.

See here ref HMS Gibraltar  from Google.

  http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_gibraltar.htm

She was built 1896 and sold off in 1923. The Pinnace refered to, would have been one of her ships boats, which would have been powered by steam.

Have tried Googling Lord Dunwick and that comes up with nowt.

Thank you Salty

You have done really well i think.  :)
The right side is much harder to read than the left.

Placed in mess for over 3 years  :o

So the Pinnace was one of HMS Gibraltars boats. Interesting.

His Navy record gives his last ship as Pembroke 2 -  From 5/8/1916 - 23/8/1919. His previous ship was Gibraltar. My G Grandad died in Chatham Hospital in 1936. So yes Chatham is connected to him.

I will check that HMS Gibraltar link out.

Many thanks for your help on this so far.  I shall have to study it well.

I think the three years will probably mean, at that place, ie the Barracks, not the Mess.

A MESS in the Navy refers to the room that he would have been assigned to.

In barracks they are usually names.

Onboard they are mostly referred to as S1 ie Starboard side 1 or P 1 ie Port side 1.  Sometimes it may not even be understood why they have been called as they are.

Ahh.  I see now.   :)

I was thinking along the lines that he was put in some kind of Naval Prison.

I am learning new things all the time on this site.

Things are becoming much clearer now   :D
