Hi Velcro

Is there anything specific you are looking for to start off the investigations?

Incidentally, in the 1841 Census for Jersey there is a James French (a baker) and he appears to be living with a Yves Quanto, his surname being one of the Christian names of Joseph French. Coincidence???

Hi Velcro

James's age in the 1841 census is given as 15, but remember this could be a rounded age.

As for which ships JF captained, if it's a UK ship then I think you have to go the the Archive Centre in Kew (but I'm not positive as I've never been asked the question before). If it's a Jersey ship then you can look at the local Registers as all Jersey mariners had to pay into a Benevolent Fund and it lists the boats they served on. These registeres aren't on-line so I will go and have a look on Monday.

Silly question!

How did you get such specific dates without seeing the certificates?

Hi

Some other family researcher that could only obtain the records that was available at the time for them.

If I look up the IGI for births and marriages I may find his mother's name and any other marriages?

Hi

Just to let you know that today I have verified most of the pre-1842 dates. I have still to locate the death of EMA and the marriage of JGQF. I cannot verify the birth of JHF as this wasn't in Jersey. There is a log of mariners lost at sea but he isn't in that list.

EMA and JHF's marriage details confirm the date and that JPA was her father but list her place of birth as La Roche Pitha, Portugal.

I have also found the death of a Elizabeth Pamela French on 8th May 1832.

On JGF and PWF's baptism records Eliza's name is given as Eliza Matilda Da Rocha.

Walter Peter's baptism record is given as Peter Walter.

As for maritime records, there are 11 French names mentioned in the Seamans Benevolent Fund and this includes a James William French. His shipping record is contained in "Volume B, number 172". Sadly, pages 160 - 223 are missing so there is no easy way of obtaining this information without looking at every ship that sailed from Jersey!

The marriage of JWF is indexed as "St Helier Marriages, May 1845 - Nov 1847 on page 10" whilst the marriage of EAF is "St Helier Marriages, Jan 1851 - Sep 1854, page 64". I've included these details if you wanted to send for the certificates.

I will look up the death of EMA and the marriage of JGQF in the next day or two. I can also see that a JWF was declared bankrupt at some point and again I will find more details.

Have you seen the 1891 census record for JGQF which shows him a "Father in law" and living with Ann plus Albert T French aged 9, Caroline Eliza, 35, Edith Mary, 11, Henry Sidney, 36 and Sidney T, aged 6?

Also in the 1861 Census he has 2 children Henry, 6 and Louisa aged 3. More details if required.

Hope that helps.
