Hi Katie!

Can you please post up the full details of the 1897 marriage certificate - including all Peter's details and the witness'?

Aside from the surname spelling - Does the Census Monica found match what you know of them?

Cheers

Hi Katrina

So, we have the right family in 1901. We also have Margaret's birth place confirmed as Ireland (Co.Mayo from submitted IGI records). There is a submitted entry for a Catherine Costello born in Co. Mayo who married a John Horan.  The reason I asked whether you were sure if the name of Margaret's father was Owen, is because of this birth/marriage record for Catherine Costello. If the writing on the 1998 marriage cert. is hard to read, it would be worthwhile you contacting SP so that they can send you out (via email these days) a clearer copy of the image.

Alternatively, you could look at Margaret's death cert to reconfirm father's name. You could also, as Ambly suggested earlier post the relevant section of the MC here on this thread for people to have a look at in order to help. Finally, if they followed Scottish naming pattern, you may well see the use of John rather than Owen in the naming of their sons (hard to say as censuses stop at 1901 at present).

As I mentioned earlier, it would appear that someone has already been researching this family given the number of submitted entries on family search.org.  There are also further children showing for John Horan and Catherine Costello on IGI, all actual extracts from the records:

1. HONORIA HORAN  Birth: 24 DEC 1865 0574, Lowpark, Mayo, Ireland
2. JOHN HORAN  Birth: 31 MAY 1868 , Mayo, Ireland
3. PATRICK HORAN Birth: 26 NOV 1870 , Mayo, Ireland
4. Winefred Horan Birth: 05 JUL 1873 , Mayo, Ireland

It certainly feels as if this is Margaret Horan's family.

Regards.

Monica  :)

As Ambly suggested, can you post the names of Peter's parents from the MC? I am curious about the accuracy/changes to his surname. I think the spelling of the 1901 entry is not incorrect. From IGI births:

PETER MAXTON     25 SEP 1866      Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents: JAMES MAXTON and CATHERINE MCDONALD

Are these the names showing on the MC for Peter's parents?

Regards.

 ??? ??? ???

Katrina

I think we are going way off line here. The 1901 Census entry is not your Margaret. That 1901 entry is certainly for a Peter Maxton married to a Margaret xx but not Horan. The parents for this Peter Maxton were as I showed.

Your Peter's parents take us straight back to Co. Mayo with the surname MARREN:

Children to Patrick Marren and Mary Gallagher:

1. JOHN MARREN Birth: 24 JUL 1864 0483, Lowpark, Mayo, Ireland
2. PETER MARREN Birth: 23 SEP 1865 0486, Lowpark, Mayo, Ireland
3. PATRICK MARREN Birth: 23 SEP 1868 , Mayo, Ireland
4. HONORIA MARREN  Birth: 17 JAN 1872 , Mayo, Ireland

Patrick and Peter are often interchangeable. Going by his age at marriage (27) in 1897, your Peter could actually have been born in 1868 and christened Patrick but also used the name Peter (quite common). This would assume that the Peter showing above b. 1865 had died early.  Alternatively, your Peter was b. 1865, as above, as was just vague about his age (again quite common).

In conclusion, both lines MARREN and HORAN look to have their origins in Co. MAYO with a particular connection to LOWPARK, which I think is where you probably need to focus on your research.

Regards.

Monica

There is an entry in the 1891 Census for a Peter Marren, 25, b. Ireland, dock labourer lodging with the Linchey family (also from Ireland) in Ardrossan, Ayrshire. Could well be your Peter having already come to Scotland.
