Does anyone know of the 'Gate Inn' please?
« on: Monday 10 January 05 11:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm trying to pinpoint the 'Gate Inn', which was located somewhere between Dunkirk and Boughton, near Faversham. I know it was open in the 1840's, but apart from not being able to find it now, I'm in the dark. Can anyone out there tell me anything about it please? I'd welcome any detail, no matter how small, as I'd like to at least visit the site even if the Inn is long gone, as I am led to believe.

Many thanks.

Hi,

Had a quick look at historical directories http://www.historicaldirectories.org and came up with (might be worth having a more thorough look if you're interested in other years):

Kelly's Directory 1891 under Pubs:

Gate, Dunkirk, Faversham
Proprietor Stephen Hall, jun

and

Post Office Directory 1855

Gate, Boughton Hill, Dunkirk
Proprietor William Payne

Don't think it exists anymore, though the 'Red Lion' in Dunkirk still does.

This map gives a good 'picture' of both Dunkirk and Boughton Hill.

(sorry I know this map reference will skew the page)

Hope that helps
Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan. Historical Directories was the obvious place to start wasn't it? Shame it didn't occur to me!!!!
Must have been a 'senior moment'!    :-\
Anyway, you've narrowed it down for me, and now I know the Inn was nearer Dunkirk than Boughton.
Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Hello :) It's been a while but in case anyone is still interested. It's a listed building, therefore it's on the Explore Kent's Past interactive map. Here's a link: http://webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.ExploringKentsPast.Web.Sites.Public/SingleResult.aspx?uid=MKE33214
