Cooper apprenticeships. kelso.

Please - can anyone tell me if there is a source for tracing a cooper apprenticeship. I assume in the Kelso area as that was where John Mason was b.c.1802 in Kelso.

From the family MI in Kelso Churchyard his uncle John Mason (1787-1844) was a distiller in Kelso.
I wonder if there could be a connection.

John (1802) married in Embleton (NBL) in 1829 and gave his occupation at that time as a cooper. Also in all subsequent censuses.

At what age was he eligible to be apprenticed?

Any help or advice gratefully received.
