Leigh is 3 miles West of Cricklade, Wiltshire.

So sounds as though it is the matching Cottage I pm'd to you earlier.

But any offers from anyone else would be welcome.

Hello Grwl

Which relatives are yours?

I found a HABGOOD couple in 1891 who were living in Stones Lane, which is near Cricklade (part of the village nowadays I daresay).  It could be that the cottage was known as HABGOOD cottage while its occupants were Habgoods but later known by other names.

If you look at the enumerators' "walks" for the various censuses you will often find building are referred to in terms of the people living in them "Collins cottage" "Edwards smithy" etc.  By following the walks, it is often possible to work out where the building in question is (or was).  But we need more information.

There is a museum and there was a very active historical society in Cricklade - I would try the following links:

http://groups.google.com/group/cricklade

http://www.cricklademuseum.org/policies/index.php

Alternatively, let us know what information you have and we can see if we can follow your relatives movements.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arronroots,
Thanks for your info, thereis already a link to the Habgoods in Wiltshire posted.
Have found a Habgood Cottages at 30 Malmesbury Rd,Leigh,so this could be the cottage,as in the 1861 census the Habgood`s were living in Malmesbury Rd !
What I would like is for someone who knows of this cottage to tell me what sort of place it is   (I don`t want to appear too nosey, but !)  I would be interested.

 Many thanks
  Grwl.

Malmesbury Road is very long!

The cottages are likely to have been detached or semi-detached farm workers homes - but not definitely.

If you look at a satellite map of Leigh on the internet you will get a picture of how rural it sitll is, despite infill building in the past twenty years or so.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi

I couldn't help but notice this one, as last week my husband and I went to Wiltshire to find his 4xg grandparent's cottage.

We found it and while stood outside, a lady asked us if we were ok.  We told her about Jesse and Florence (said ancestors) and she promptly invited us into the cottage and showed us around.  Most of the building was still original and you could see where they ran the post office and where they lived.

The current owner was so kind and it's amazing what people will do for you.
