Joseph Ross Derry City
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Good day!  I am a new comer to Rootschat.
Joseph Ross, my great grandfather, was born abt 1854/57 in/near Burt, Co Donegal. In 1874 he joined the Londonderry Militia declaring he was 19 yrs old. C of I . and then the Army
1881 Joseph married Susan CARTON at Waterside RC Chapel. They had Mary Ann b. jan 1882
Alexander (my grandfather) b Sep 1883
John Joseph (died as infant)b Nov 1885
James                                  b Feb 1888
Susan died 1890 (TB)
Joseph Married again to Elizabeth LAFFERTY(neeQUIGLEY) same church  on 26 Dec 1890
Catherine b 1893
William 1894.
1901 shows the family living in Union St. Waterside, but only James, Catherine(Kate) and James and John McLaughlin the sons of 3rd wife Susan.
I would dearly like to know what happened to the family.
Alexander joined the RGA married my Grandmother in Co. Cork, served overseas and as far as I know lost contact.
If this is familiar to anyone, please contact me.
TIA

Hello Finnis,

I've linked this thread to your one about Conroy/Cobh on the Co. Cork board in case anyone refers to the Ross family in a message on that board. http://tinyurl.com/3gcljz

Aghadowey, Hi!
Thank you for the information re the Ross family.  I have not been very active on the family history front of late but have just started again so this has given me a boost.  Should you come across anything else in your 'travels', I will be very happy to hear from you.
Kind regards
Finnis

Hi, found a couple more births for your Joseph Ross. With his wife Elizabeth Lafferty there is a third child Joseph Ross baptised on 6 December 1896. Also the William & Catherine that Aghadowey lists are probably both his children as well as even though mother's name listed as Quigley on William's baptism both took place at Ebrington Barracks. Also, with his wife Susan McLaughlin/McLoughlin,I found another two births; Agnes born 26 September 1902 and Sarah Jane born 22 November 1905.Hope this helps,Kim

Hi Blemdookie - Kim
Thank you for your replies for info on the Ross family.  You are a gem!  You have taken me back another generation.  I had discovered Joseph's baptism in Burt Church (converted to a restaurant) and that they came from Balleyderowen.  Were these other children also baptised in Burt?
Regards
Shirley aka Finnis
