Alfred Brown
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 17:29 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find Alfred Brown(e) on the 1891 census.
On the 1901 census he is aged 19 (so birth year approx 1882)and living with his mother (then Annie/Anne Bender)and step family.
Alfred Browns birthplace is given as Clapham, his mother Anne or Annie's birthplace is Boxford.
I can't find his birth, or his mothers marriage to Mr Brown either......I'm stuck  :'(
Any help gratefully received
His mothers maiden name is Herbert and she is on the 1871, census at home with her parents in Boxford, David and Margaret Herbert - then I lose her......

Likely birth of Alfred junior:

Mar 1882:

Alfred BROWNE Camberwell 1d 816

So he appears to have been born after his father's death.

Anna

Ah yes - was only looking under Browne not Brown.  I'd forgotten he was Alfred H. in 1891. And of course Herbert was his mother's maiden name.

So if that's him -(looks likely) he was born around the time of his father's death.

Many thanks - I was telling someone about Percy Bender and realized I knew little of his mother.
She married Alfred Brown and was widowed then married Charles Bender, that made a family of Alf Brown, Charles and Henry Bender.
She went on to have other children Florence and William, Charles Bender died
She then has a child (Percy) by and later marries Charles A Bender.(her stepson)
Annie dies and Charles Bender later marries my grandmother Annie Louise Discombe, who already had two daughters: Gwen and Olive.
Charles Arthur and Annie Louise then have a daughter of their own - my mother !
It's like a soap  :)
I really appreciate your help, thanks again.
My mother remembers Alf Brown and Percy Bender, but she thinks that Percy Bender moved to Glasgow, where his wife Agnes came from, just as war broke out, to work in the shipyards.  He was never seen or heard of again.
