Richard Hickman born 1794
« on: Thursday 06 March 08 11:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for the birth of Richard Hickman around 1795.

I have the 1841 census which has him at age 45 born in county.  He married Phillis Funnell from chiddingly in 1821 in Hellingly.  In 1842 he and Phillis and children emigrated to Tasmania.

I'm sure that a contact told me she thought he was born in Mayfield but I don't know why.

If anyone can find his birth or baptism I would be very grateful ;D

Update

I now have a copy of the Mayfield parish register and there is no sign of him there.  Must have been born elsewhere  :-\

Did they have any other children, I'm looking for a Richard 1795 ish?

Shall have to have another look for this one when I've got time.

Is that the Sarah Gander and something to do with the Onion Pie?

I have just found this forum entry after looking at the Richard Hickmer line on ancestry.com from 1690. I don't think my Richard Hickmer is in this line. The Richard Hickmer that is the son of James and Sarah, died in Hailsham Sussex, whereas the Richard Hickmer (Hickman), born abt 1794, I'm looking for immigrated to Tasmania and died there in 1876. I can see why there would be some confusion as both were born in Lewes, Sussex. I have scoured the pedigree of the Hickmers near Hailsham/Hellingly/Lewes and none of them include my Richard. The mystery continues.

Hi DeeB

The Richard Hickman I am looking for emmigrated to Tasmania and died there in 1876.  So are you saying I should be looking for a Richard Hickmer, (the same as yours) and a birth in Lewes?  I still have been unable to find the birth of my Richard Hickman.

Good to hear from you.
I believe we are looking for the same Richard.
His name on documents especially the marriage to Phillis is Hickmore, but others in the area were called Hickmer. I guess its one of those phonetic annomolies. I am emailing another lady who has a George Hickmer born 1776 in Kent but doesn't know his siblings. I will do more research on him as I need a new line to look at.
