« on: Friday 07 March 08 19:51 GMT (UK) »
My cousin and I are at a brickwall  researching, with our ancestor, David Graham Born 1793,probably of Workington,Cumberland, or in that area.
He married Mary Sharp at St Michaels Church Workington 24 Dec 1818.  The record says 'of Workington' I can not find him in I.G.I. HELP! please.  ::)

The "born about 1793 Workington" IGI entry has no substance in fact - apart from

1) he was married in Workington
2) if he was 25 when he married, he would have been born in 1793.

I think they may have been in Whitehaven in 1841

Pipe House Lane
David GRAHAM 50 Cart Driver
Mary 40
John 20 Carpenter App
Isabella 19
Jane 17
Thomas 12
William 10
David 7
All born Cumb
The ages of John, Isabella and Jane match the Workington baptisms in the IGI.

Isabella is head of house in 1851 - parents deceased?
18 Pipe House Lane
Isabella GRAHAM 28 Annuitant, Workington
Jane 26 Workington
Thomas 22 Carter, Whitehaven
David 17 Moulder at Foundry Iron, Whitehaven
Richard (neph) 4 Whitehaven

If there are any clues, perhaps it is in the name of the eldest son (John) being a possible indication of David's father's name.

Sorry, no help really :(
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Thanks Geoff, it helps to have another opinion. The name John is a good possibility, for his fathers name. I will also check I.G.I. to see John, Isabella and Janes baptism. John was our grt grandfather x2.

Hi J and GeoffE,

J. posting here in stead of emailing you as names may ring a bell with others.

We think Richard the Neph 1851 is John's son, Mary's parents are John Sharp and Isabella Sherwen. So we think that David's parents are Richard and Jane because the first lot of children born to David and Mary were John, Isabella, Richard and Jane.

1841 Census we have David named after his father so leaves Thomas & William, if these 2 had been David's father name l think would have been an earlier choice of name.

I am researching the Sharp family of Harrington/Moresby/Ellenborough. Do you have any more information on your Mary Sharp?

Amazingly, there are only 2 David Graham deaths in whitehaven between 1841 and 1851 and even more amzingly only 5 mary deaths! Even then there was a description of the informant on the cert so geting both davids and comparing the informant (son/daughter) with childrens names might win the lottery. Alternative it could be a doctor/ neighbour. Worth a chance?
