Annyalla , Drumgallon , Co. Monaghan

I wish this had shown up two weeks ago. I just returned from 10 days in Ireland which included 3 in Annyalla with a morning spent in St. Michael's cemetery. I noticed several Flannigan graves but didn't take note of them.

I was with my cousin who spent her summers with her grandmother in Cloughan and she has a ferocious memory.

From the picture I posted earlier of Mrs. Flannigan and Anne Dympna Gannon, we were able to track down the house in the background and found that Jerry Flannigan a relative of Mrs. Flannigan is the current owner.

My Mrs. Flannigan (Minnie) was the school teacher for the area (Annyalla National School?) and was married to the sergeant of the local constabulary. The house on the Clontibret Road was the local CIS barracks but it was never attacked during the revolution out of respect for the school teacher.

Her husband's name wasn't mentioned. They had two daughters Bridget and Christine and a son whose name I didn't get. Bridget married a chemist and moved to Dublin. Christine just disappeared and I think the son died youngish.

Jerry Flannigan owns the house now

There is an effort on at St. Michael's to identify all the gravesites. As soon as I have them loaded I will post images of the map they have posted in the entry of the church. It only lists the first person for each grave but it might be some help.

The boy in the picture is Gerry's father Gerard with his two sisters Mary (Cissy) and Bridget (Birdie) on the left, I've listened to stories for years of how they were both beaten daily at school by their auntie Minnie, she had a son Fr Patrick Flaninigan (Fr Packie). see: http://www.radiofones.com/annagh.jpg

Minnie Flannigan was a whicked teacher, we were told.
She had a son Fr Patrick Flannigan (Fr Packie) who became Dean Flannigan in Enniskillen, his father was John Flannigan a member of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) based at Cremartin Police Barracks, bought by Gerry Flannigan in the early 60s.
The main Flannigan homestead was Annagh.
This reunion picture was taken in the 60s, all gone now R.I.P.

Here is a picture of your Mrs Flannigans sister Rosie (Lunny) Boylan in her later years. She was a lovely old lady. There was a third sister Cassy Lunny who frequently rescued the children from the school house during minnie hysteria (we were told).

In this picture we see Gerard Flanagan with his sisters Mary (Cissy) and Bridget (Birdie) children of Patrick Flanagan and Margaret E (Lunny) Flanagan of Annagh, Annyalla.
They told us some stories about their auntie Minnie!
Sargent (RIC) John Flanagan and Minnie (Lunny) Flanagan of Cremartin had a son who became Fr Patrick Flanagan (Fr Packie) and later Dean Flanagan in Enniskillen.

In various letters and documents the spelling is FLANAGAN.

I have a bunch of old photos from my great aunt's visit with family in Cloghan in 1933. Among them is one of my aunt with "Mrs. Flannigan"
Mrs. Flannigan is on the left and my aunt, Anne Dympna Gannon is on the right.

It will be nice when you share the bunch of old photos from your great aunt's 1933 visit ?
