Just came across your post. I am a Scottish descendant of Francis Benson and Agnes Bishop. Over ten years ago, I did a little bit of research into my family history but haven't gone any further with it. My grandmother was Wilhelmina Benson b. 1888 d.1953. Her father and mother were Francis Benson born 1849 and Marion Kidd who married 1875.
Francis was son of George Benson born 1830 who I think was the brother of your James b.1835.

Okay so our Benson family came to Australia in 1883, James Benson b. 1836 who married Isabella Armstrong, yes you are correct, younger brother of George Benson b. 24.5.1829. 

If you can give me more details now of your family, please.   We have been in contact with Benson family members in Dunferlime, they come down the line of George Benson b. 1829 who was killed in a mine explosion in 1872, he married Elizabeth Gill.   Next descendant is Alexander Gill Benson b. 1859 who married Jeanne Jane Old, then next William Old benson who married Johan Pollach.   William Pollach Benson b. 1923 who married Elizabeth Dickson. 

Could you please give me more details of your family line.

Just to let you know that Lori and I were actually in Auchendinny in August. I took a photo of Lori standing outside their house as indicated in the Census, or the best best I could calculate it to be :-) Visited some other Scottish locations too with mixed results. Found a great Willcock headstone at Congleton - think they're your side too?
