Banchory Ternan
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 14:40 GMT (UK) »
Whilst researching my husband's family, I discovered that his Great Aunt had married in 1910, in Banchory Ternan.   A long way to travel from South Wales, where she and her husband to be lived!  The register shows that he had an address in South Wales which I am aware of, but her address is in Banchory, as she would have had to be resident there for the banns, etc. is not one I can track down, through family research. I cannot make out address - it looks like Thornhill, Upper Arheadie, Banchory? Can anyone assist?  Is there such an address still in existence?   It might be a clue as to why they were in Banchory in the first place!  Is it similar to Gretna Green?! :D

hi there,

I am researching my tree from Banchory Ternan and have some of the record books out from the Local library.

Do you want o give me some details and I'll see if I can help.

Arbeadie is the area. Banchory Ternan is now part of Banchory, Aberdeenshire - not too far from me.

Hi smeni and KBG.  The website www.old-maps.co.uk shows an Upper Arbeadie and a Lower Arbeadie.  They were almost certainly farms but there is no sign of them on present-day maps of Banchory.  However, the name is perpetuated as follows:

Upper Arbeadie Road
Upper Arbeadie Place
Arbeadie Road
Arbeadie Terrace
Arbeadie Avenue

The coordinates for the 1868 map   are 370000  and 796200.
Be warned !  The map can be painfully slow to download.

Thank you both - I have looked at maps, but although i can see Upper Arbeadie, the names of the properties are not there - not that it would make any difference to me!  Think the name of the house she stayed in was Thornhill.  I'm wondering why our great aunt would have gone there with her husband to be to get married? I suspect a relative lived there, I know she had an aunt and an uncle in Scotland, think grandparents would have been deceased by then.  Great aunt was called Beatrice Mary Kate Eidman and she married Allan Payne in Banchory on 11 October 1910 at St Ternans Church.  Witnesses were John Hay Clark and Isabel Joan Martin(? - not sure if this is right, writing is poor)  I know they both lied about their ages, probably why they went to Scotland to get married - she was 12 years older than Allan Payne, on registry it says he is 33 and she is 32!  He was a "toy boy"!!!  If you come across any info in Banchory, I would be grateful to receive it - thank you for your assistance :)

Stranger and stranger !  I came across this website:
http://www.banchoryacademy.co.uk/downloads/Banchory%20Handbook.pdf

It mentions that a Mrs Bruce, Thornhill, Woodside Road, Banchory AB31 4EN (01330-825800) is a parent member of the Parent Council of Banchory Academy.  Although the area is very built-up I would say that Woodside Road is the same road shown on Old Maps with Woodside of Arbeadie to the right.

Thank you Isles.   That would seem to be the place, I googled it and Woodland Road leads on to Upper Arbeadie Road, which was the original address.  Will investigate further :)
